Town CEO Mark Ashton says club sponsor Ed Sheeran is a “really special man”, who “passionately cares about his local football club”.

Sheeran, 33, who last week celebrated promotion with the Blues squad at Chinny's Sports Bar in Halesworth, recently announced that he is extending his sponsorship of the Blues into a fourth season.

“It’s something else which is really special,” Ashton told TownTV. “He’s a really special man, who genuinely cares about his local football club and his local community and asks for so little in return.

“Sponsors the club, had sponsored the club at a top level in League One, had sponsored it at top financial level in the Championship and will sponsor it at a top financial level in the Premier League. Can’t thank him enough, he’s family.

“The players have had the chance to spend some time with him, I’m sure the fans have seen that on socials.

“A world superstar, who passionately cares about his local football club. Just brilliant.”

Meanwhile, Sheeran remains the richest young musician in the UK and richest person under 40 in the East of England, according to the latest Sunday Times Rich List, which estimates his wealth at £340 million having paid himself £62 million for the first half of his Mathematics tour.

BobbyBell added 13:22 - May 17 Maybe he can write an Ipswich Town song? In the Robson days we all sang Ipswich, Ipswich to Amazing Grace and it made your hair stand on end. Certain songs go around every ground but a unique song is special.

BlueySwede added 13:40 - May 17 Regardless of whether you like his music or not (I do), everyone should understand Sheeran's significance as a sort of billboard for Ipswich Town. Ashton and the club's management understand the value of things like that, unlike the previous regime.

My teenage daughter thinks I'm totally crazy watching matches (eg against Forest Green Rovers) k/o at 2am here in Bangalore, India, but its the fact that Ed is with us means she is with us too... (and will hopefully be so for life too). Great to have you with us Ed!!!

Steve_ITFC_Sweden added 16:50 - May 17 I don't listen to the music, but Ed is a fantastic asset for the club, and as far as I can judge, genuinely "one of us." Although I know little about him, he seems a very down-to-earth guy. Yet another piece in the jigsaw that is rapidly becoming ITFC Updated Version for the Modern Age.

NorfolknWay added 02:19 - May 18 I love Ed Sheeran for obvious reasons. His music is not exactly to my tastes, but I'll happily listen to it whenever I encounter it. I quite enjoy his acting too, especially the self deprecating version of himself he played in "Yesterday". Maybe a Yesterday sequel could be made. This time after some crazy power grid failure in 2007 a world exists where there is no Marcus Evans. Ipswich Town FC goes bust and falls out of the football league, but through a bizarre set of circumstances the entire share holding falls into the hands of a local sixteen year old busker. As his music career takes off so does his decision making around the club that he loves. Ipswich rise back up through the leagues until a season in League One when Ed wants to become more hands off so he hires Mark Ashton. Ashton suggests that Ed sells his share holding to an American consortium, and there the movie ends. And the whole Marcus Evans era never happened :).

ElephantintheRoom added 15:17 - May 21 Whilst not wishing to deny Ashton his moment in the sun hero worshipping Ed Sheeran, this sponsorship works both ways - and may even be a tax write off for Sheeran. 3,000 supporters who probably love the club just as much and actually helped keep it going in the dark days under Sheepshanks have not been valued quite so highly -
