Mail delivery has been a terrible business ever since the Internet destroyed the direct mail industry. Royal Mail has to keep making uneconomic deliveries to remote locations. UPS & FedEx can cherry pick the more attractive parts of the growing parcel business, leaving Royal Mail to do the "last mile" of delivery. The US Postal Service is also losing a fortune each year, for the same reasons.

It's done pretty well considering it literally only delivers pizza menus, council waffle and NHS letters.

Every other entity has evolved beyond post.
