Burns Withdraws From Wales Squad
Wednesday, 20th Mar 2024 00:06

The FAW has confirmed that Blues wideman Wes Burns has withdrawn from the Wales squad ahead of their Euro 2024 play-offs due to the hamstring injury he suffered during Saturday’s 6-0 thrashing of Sheffield Wednesday.

Burns limped off after 38 minutes of the game against the Owls and the news of his withdrawal is no surprise, manager Kieran McKenna having said the injury was unlikely to be insignificant.

“It doesn’t look great, it’s a hamstring,” McKenna said after the match. “It doesn’t look like a minor one, I don’t think it feels like a minor one.

“Of course, we’ll scan it over the next few days and assess it, but that’s the undoubted low point of today.

“Everyone’s gutted for Wes down in the dressing room and we just have our fingers crossed that the severity isn’t as bad as it possibly could be.”

The Welsh, who finished third in their qualifying group, take on Finland at the Cardiff City Stadium on Thursday.

Should they win that tie, they will face either Poland or Estonia five days later for a place in the finals in Germany next summer.

Nathan Broadhead and Kieffer Moore remain members of the squad.

Get well soon Wes! Thankfully 2 of the weeks for his recovery will take place during this international break.

Hopefully not too much longer needed as Wes has been in sparkling form.

Fingers crossed the scan shows less damage than initially feared

Unfortunately that might well be his season over for now ... sad if so. But pointless trying to rush him back and suffering and even bigger tear. Get fit soon Wes , youre a top bloke ..

I may well be clutching at straws here, but seems it took a few days to confirm his withdrawal from the squad? Could that indicate that it was touch and go? Probably just wishful thinking.

strategic injuries may be tempting now that the international call ups at the most critical time of the season are such a problem. McK's brilliance is to train his players for more than one position eg:Chaplin who has gone off the boil of late gives way to Hutchinson who destroys WED, as a number 10 and Jackson comes in for Burns and delivers a killer pass which is converted for a goal

Normally i would replace him with Hutchinson but he looks far more effective in the number ten role and a greater goal threat. I like Jackson but not to sure if he can do it over 90 minutes maybe an extended run in the team might benefit him. Sarmiento is another one in the same category looks better coming off the bench. But knowing McKenna i think Hutchinson will revert back to his wide role as we are well covered in the number 10 area of the pitch Broadhead, Chaplin and Taylor who was a number 10 at Peterborough. Burns will be missed especially for his defensive qualities and physicality.

Why is everyone so tight lipped on this injury? It's now Wednesday night and we are none the wiser how bad it is, all we have is a quote from the manager from Saturday. Surely it is no advantage to any of our competitors to know, so why the deafening silence?

Not really the club’s style but perhaps not as bad as first appeared and it might be a club over country issue given our situation?

Ormperjaps they really aren’t sure how bad the injury is, either way let’s hope for a seift recovery, important player to have available for the run in/ play offs if possible.

Wes is a critical player for us and I have my fingers crossed that the injury is not as bad as first indicated. That said, hamstrings can be tricky and we need to be careful not to rush him back too soon.
Lets all hope for a quick recovery....coyb

'Why is everyone so tight lipped on this injury?' The two obvious answers are that hamstring injuries require careful assessment with scans (as KMcK said). The answer won't yet exist. Second: Knowing injury details is a great advantage to our competitors. That's so clearly wrong I don't know why it was written. Blackburn will be more interested in Burns injury than anyone on this forum.

Olive, that's rather a patronising response isn't it?
I think they know exactly what the extent of the injury is by now, but still no news, secondly clubs don't believe what their competitors announce anyway. McKenna could say he's out for a month and they would still consider he might turn out for us on Friday week.
Anyway, thanks for you opinion.
