A Misplaced Concern
Written by paulthebluealien on Thursday, 11th Dec 2014 11:34

So, here we are. You may be drinking a beer. I myself am eating raisins. Yet, no matter what you are doing Town are absolutely flying right now. That much is both clear and undeniable.

We have now a decent squad of around 20 players of whom are picked or present on the bench regularly and there is now a squad with depth and competition for places.

Not to mention players criticised frequently, by myself included and wrongly so, such as Jay Tabb, Stephen Hunt and Cole Skuse who are now excelling.

Town are currently sat in second place and having their best season in living memory, as everyone who knows me has heard at least ten times this week. Oh, alright, so it's not quite as brilliant as that but let's all be honest here, we've been suffering as a football family for far too long, whilst watching those Canary bastards enjoying undeserved success.

Now everything is rosy. The garden looks better. The house looks cleaner. My essays look more intelligent (though, this is of course debatable) and even the in laws are more fun to be around.

So, where can it all go wrong? Well, our winning mentality, togetherness and brutal efficiency at the moment seems, for this fan anyway, to be showing no signs of decreasing nor of letting up. Of course, we may hit a blip but this is not a concern, for most teams will at some stage. Or, we could bring back the Rotherham duet of Paul Taylor and Anthony Wordsworth and also the goal scoring machine that's Frank Nouble.

Ah, now there is an interesting idea. "MICK HOW COULD YOU LET TAYLOR GO?" were the cries that reverberated around Portman Road upon the announcement that Taylor was being sent to Rotherham. Some Town fans even acknowledged in typical gung-ho fashion and full of doomed expressions and gloomy faces that Rotherham may even finish above Town, with such a majestic maestro in their ranks.

This of course, is utter trash. Paul Taylor has, in my opinion minimal amounts of footballing ability. In this sense, I am defining this in regards to a team player. Paul Taylor is simply not a Mick McCarthy team-ethic player. Of course, he may be classed as a better footballer than say Jay Tabb, but who would you rather have? I for one would pick Tabb any day. The hunger, fight and desire that Tabb shows would trump Taylor.

Under his brief amount of appearances he was made to look like the Professor Dumbledore of football, though this was mainly due to the hopelessness of players such as Lee Bowyer.

I cannot ever see Paul Taylor in a Town shirt again. The same, it should be mentioned, for both Wordsworth and Nouble, both of whom put in the effort but lacked the ruthlessness of other Town players.

Which, in turn, leads me to the main problem that has been suggested which could destabilise Town’s brilliant season, thus far. This being the, albeit, misplaced ideas that are circulating around Portman Road and fans alike like vultures, the fear that a mass exodus of Town players will be leaving the club in January.

This won't happen. This is not to it rule out the summer if we are still stuck in this rut of a division (although I do not think we will be) - that players such as Tyrone Mings, David McGoldrick and even Daryl Murphy would relish the chance to play in the Premier League.

Let's be honest, we all would really. My problem though is that if you look at most of Town's squad they have been tied onto longer contracts or at least are in contract extension discussions.

Moreover, players such as the aforementioned trio owe the club, the fans and McCarthy himself for the faith that he has shown them. Let us not look away from the importance of this, McGoldrick had a broken career stuck in League One, Murphy was being used in completely the wrong position and Mings was at Chippenham Town.

I do not think we will lose our players. Rather, I believe that we may add Sean St Ledger and Noel Hunt as permanent additions to our squad. The likes of Jack Collison and Darren Ambrose may well be not be offered new contracts and will be packed off to continue their trade elsewhere.

So, I just want to leave the readers with this, for whom I am always grateful for taking the time to read, with a concluding thought. Let's not fear January and the dreaded transfer market but instead let us welcome it as a chance to continue our expansion as a top two team within this division and continue to propel ourselves to the promised land of the Premier League, once more.

If you have enjoyed reading this or hated it so much it's made you verbally abuse someone let me know. Recommend it to your friends, to the Daily Mail or even The Sun. I wouldn't mind a payday and this is the kind of stuff that they absolutely love. Thanks for reading folks!

Nice blog. I mostly agree but I think it is too early to write off Nouble. Of course he is not at Championship standard yet, but he is still young.

Brilliant article. Mick McCarthy is so far ahead of most fans understanding of football club management and work-in-progress. He is tactically sound, with changing game plans for differing opposition. He understands disruptive characters such as Taylor and Chopra. He has binded a team together. He has got that magical luck factor, which partly comes from adaptable game-plans and 100% effort all over the pitch. This is a glorious first half of the season. But we must remember the Cardiff and Norwich games, it doesn't all go our way. Trust in Mick that we make the most of our resources at Ipswich Town.

Hindsight is wonderful, perception more difficult ......I wasn't happy that Taylor wasn't given a chance and was weary of Micks team selections stroke tactics....however, Micks nouse , experience and man management have won through in a way that not many could have appreciated at the outset of the season, and certainly not after the Norwich defeat.....and yes Taylor has proved Mick to be oh so right....and the armchair analysts (me?!) wrong...but that is the benefit of hindsight for you....and a rather stubborn but perceptive Yorkshireman .....

One more potent striker is needed - it wont be Sammon, Bajner, Taylor or Nouble! Maybe a cheeky bid for Nakhi Wells in January?
