Fortuna Favours the Brave

So, who is actually happy with style of football we are playing? Do people really believe we will get promoted playing like this?

We are playing appalling football. Can anyone counter that argument? We have hardly had a shot on target again. We have no attacking or creative intent. It wouldn't matter what strikers we have, as they are given terrible (or virtually no) service.

We sell Daryl Murphy, put Brett Pitman up front and in his first game, at home to Preston (not exactly Barcelona), he doesn't get a shot on goal in 90 minutes!

We are not going to create any luck for ourselves as we only have one tactic - to try to match the opposition and stifle the game. If we are lucky, we might have 10 minutes at the end to pop off a few token shots.

Cole Skuse and Jonathan Douglas together at home is inexcusable and Mick McCarthy is happy to scrape 1-0 wins or 0-0 draws, at home, to teams in worse form than us and against teams below us in the table.

McCarthy himself has said the entertainment value needs to be upped at Portman Road, but this is notably absent. McCarthy has said we have a great bunch of youngsters knocking on the door, but are they going to get a chance other than through injury, such as Josh Emmanuel coming on today for Adam Webster.

By the way quite what Emmanuel makes of McCarthy’s comments regarding Chambers, "He will be playing there on Saturday and on Tuesday and probably on Saturday and probably for the next 38 games or whatever we’ve got left".

Quite frankly that is an incomprehensible statement, from a manager who at best is defensive, whilst at worst losing control. If it were Ronaldo, Messi, Neymar, then maybe, but for Chambers!

As much as I admire his passion, he is nowhere near our best player. If that is the attitude McCarthy is cultivating, ie you are my favourite XI, regardless of how you perform, no wonder we are slipping into utter mediocrity. Jeez.

I am not necessarily advocating McCarthy out (although I am getting very close), in part because a change of manager does not necessarily result in a positive change of form and also because the club, (read, owner, board etc) are equally as culpable. However, something has to change, McCarthy has to change, the club has to change. We are becoming a laughing stock. Boring, boring Ipswich, is an understatement

It isn’t that difficult. So fed up with the atrocious football at Portman Road this season, I went to see Fortuna Düsseldorf against Bochum last week. Oh joy, what a relief. I saw more football in that one game, than in totality at Portman Road this season (I did not see the Barnsley game, but that does cover Stevenage, Norwich, Preston and Villa).

Passing to each other, on the ground, but getting the ball up field when necessary. All three goals scored from low crosses into the box, neat interchanges of passing, different players running beyond the opposing defence. Pretty simple.

A great atmosphere, despite the ground being half full, the fans responding to their team attacking, creating chances, playing football when appropriate and getting rid when needed.

Fortuna are not much different to Ipswich, it can be different, it must be different. Please McCarthy, please Ipswich, this is not the Ipswich way, be brave, change before it is too late.

He can't do it - dull hoofball is all he knows.

Bite the bullet and just say McCarthy OUT

A very well constructed factual blog, highlighting what many of us have been saying week in & week out. It's not to do with results - it's our style of playing & the whole approach to tactics & team selection which we feel does not befit this great club.
The only thing I disagree with is giving MM a chance to change things. I don't think he ever will & the fact that the owner rewarded him with an improved extended contract makes things very depressing.

Good blog. But I fear you still believe Mcarthy will change his style this will never happen. It's his way or the highway Cameron Stewart will vouch for that he was never given a chance.

Spot on - sums up all our frustrations - especially the comments about Chambers/Emanuel.

Really good Blog, agree with everything, except he should just go now and we might have a season to enjoy.

Going back to the quotes regarding chambers, simply shocking man management to the rest of the squad, how must they feel? All 11 positions on the pitch must be filled by merit.

MM just go now, you are not wanted here!

Very good blog that captures exactly how many of us are feeling.

I don't believe McCarthy will ever change - ask any Wolves fan. Equally, I see no sign from Evans/Milne that they acknowledge any need for change. Even if they did, the January contract extensions/improvements they so generously and unnecessarily handed to McCarthy and TC would make change very expensive for Evans.

A constructive blog.
MM will not change, we knew what was coming when he was appointed. We reached the play offs because murphy hit 27 goals but the style was the same. Some argue that its the tight budget he is on but I feel if he had the money he would only buy dearer players to perform the same role. a change of manager! well it would be the same personnel, but different systems? I see the problem as Evans, the three managers he has employed were dross and not the Ipswich type. Surely the next one will be of the same mould. What we need is evans to public state what his intentions for this club are ,honestly, and that is never likely to happen.

I've been to 15 live games both last season and this....and have yet to see us score. Boring is an understatement.

Fortuna for you, Inverness Caledonian Thistle for me - it's great to fully enjoy a match for once but saddening that it does not involve the team you have supported since you were seven years old.

Great blog - thanks. I agree that our style of football is awful and attending games no longer provides entertainment. When MM took over I thought he was the best we could have hoped for at the time. Times change though - we have a number of young and talented players at the club who are being taught to fear losing. We have experienced players who are being told that they are guaranteed to be on the team sheet regardless of past performances. If these youngsters are to be the future then attitudes need to change and I no longer believe that MM is willing to learn and adapt, or give everyone equal opportunity to impress.

Interesting to see what fans would prefer, hoof ball and not seeing any football but draw 0-0 or change our system completely and see what could be achieved. If not McCarthy out by Xmas

Very good analysis of where the Town are currently, what is not going right and what this may mean for the future. 15,000 loyal fans are, I believe, saying pretty much the same thing - not to mention the 4,000 or so fans who have voted with their feet over the past 14 months. If so many fans can see the problem, why is it the manager or the owner can not! If the manager can not face facts now, then with much regret I say enough is enough, before we get relegated this season. Playing for a point at home is not good enough. I believe we were capable of beating Aston Villa, Brighton and Huddersfield had the right team been picked and a more attacking mentality been adopted. Instead of winning, we have failed to score a single goal in those games. Our strikers have only scored one goal from open play all season!!! We can not pass the ball at all through midfield and I would be very interested to see the player stats on successful passes. It is very sad, when we go to Portman Road, we hear the team selection and it is then extremely difficult to find a single fan who thinks we will win the game - we either expect to lose or hold on to a 0-0 draw. Something needs to change and quickly! Otherwise, gates will continue to drop and relegation is almost a certainty. Please MM or ME do not wait until it is too late!
