For New Zealand. He shouldnt get anywhere near a decent pub team.

By your logic, that bird who was the first woman athlete to appear in an Olympics for some backward country is a world beater then?

No? But by your logic an Olympics would suggest she is.

Didn't think he had one of his better games today but I think he has the potential to be a pretty decent CB.

How about England under 18 caps? 65 appearances in the championship? I should probably just do this.

Oh christ, you really haven't got a scooby have you?

England U18 caps - what is he now though, 22? So not good enough for England after U18 and heads off to play for the mighty NZ instead.

65 appearances in the championship maybe, but how many mistakes in each and every one?

Where was he going today for the goal? How many times did Chambers bollock him for mistakes?

Face it, the boys a donkey - always has been, always will be.

He's still young for a centre back, give him a break. It's a new partnership it will take time to gel. I presume he was on Kazim-Richards at the far post? Who was dealing with the first header, it appear to be absolutely no one, I found that more worrying. It was a very soft goal to concede.

I have to say I thought Kazim-Richards appeared to have the better of him through out the game, luckily he appeared to be their only outlet.

Really are you serious? Let's see people in the game who have probably forgotten more about football than you know think otherwise. And your statements show you for a fool. The man is paid more money than you could hope for to play football. He is on his what 3 or 4 contract under 3 different managers and not one of them has trid to get rid of him. I wasn't at the game as I had to work but listened to the commentary and didn't hear on bad thing said about him.
Oh I forgot he was at fault for the goal. Show me a defender in any team at any level and I'll show you someone who was as one time been 'at fault' for a goal.

It may be your opinion and you might be entitled to it but it is still a crap opinion.

From somebody who was at the game:

Tommy Smith had a slow 25 minutes, but learnt as the game went on how to best deal with a bigger, powerful and physical Blackburn team (Kazim-Richards) particularly. The very fact that he did learn, and didn't buckle and panic is a credit.

For somebody who is 'a donkey' and 'kept making mistakes', he did (along with the team) pretty well to keep Blackburn to little or no clear chances at goal. The only time I can think of uncertainty was Loach and Smith towards the end, and as a keeper', Loach was hesitant making the save better than it needed to be (that is not a moan, just what happens in a game).

As for the goal, I was 'tuther end, but unless Smith is expected to defend the initial header and then the second ball all on his own....it is harsh to pin the blame on one player. The free header at the back post was poor, if that was Tommy's responsibility, fine. His error, but as stated above, he was marking Kazim-Richards?

He was ball watching for the corner and the chap then got a free header which caused the goal.

During the game he got the wrong side of his man a number of times and often let the ball bounce from their goal kicks and free kicks.

Thought him and JET were really poor today.

On today's display (along with last seasons) you can see why PJ wants another centre half.

When I read threads like this, I realise how much I detest some of our fans. Not you particularly, but the OP.

He's a young player, still learning his trade, he's not a donkey. He's not the greatest in the division, but he can do a job. I also would be looking for an additional Player as our second CH - but he's not a donkey and anyone suggesting that should have a look at themselves.

If you want two see a disastrous performance as a CH, check out Michael Turner for Norwich yesterday. That doesn't mean he is a donkey either, but he looked terrible yesterday.

I do tend to agree, put it this way, he doesn't read the game like a Mowbray or to the extreme here, John Walk, and that has nothing to do with his age....you either have that or you simply don't, making odd mistakes is something totally different..

We need TS desperately right now, he can do a job no doubt, but I too can see why we're looking for another defender...

he does look better than this time last season though!

A well reasoned, balanced view except for the fact that donkey Smith should have been marking Dann at the far post, but for some reason ran under the ball and was 5 yards off him when he made the header

Yeah, apart from that a well reasoned, balanced view but if you can't see it or don't want to admit it, that says more about you than me

I thought Smith had a decent game and I was impressed with his calmness and distribution.

Switched off for the goal but I thought generally his partnership with Chambers looked strong against a decent strikeforce.

As stated, I couldn't see from the other end. If he should have been marking Dann at the far post, as stated in my previous thread, that is his error. Other than that, I clearly do not have the where-with-all or knowledge you possess sir, or the apparent ability to see the negatives in everything.

I feel that allowing the ball to bounce is a no no as a CH, UNLESS being unable to out muscle the striker you mark for the high ball is worse. That is where TS learnt as te game went on. When he was turned, there was someone else, Luke Chambers I believe his name is, TS defensive 'partner' covering him. Lucky coincidence that, surely wasn't a tactic due to an awkward attack or anything.

Frustrating, as you raise good points, but fire them out like a sledgehammer cracking a nut...

I've forgotten more about football than you will ever know.

If he makes a mistake just once, fair enough, but can you honestly say yesterday was the first poor game he's had or even the first time he's made the same mistake for a goal? No, thought not.

You keep sticking up for him if you want, I'm not sure why unless you're one of those 'he came through the academy he can't do any wrong' types, but whilst he plays we will go nowhere.

Will be interested to see if he retains his place if/when another CB comes in. I think he won't, but as you are so knowledgeable lets wait and see whose right shall we?

I think he looks a decent young player to be honest and that's the key, young. He is commanding at times in the air and whilst I couldn't make the game yesterday I was at the game on Tuesday and yes he made a mistake by not closing down quick enough for the Rovers goal but I feel that by playing alongside Chambers and getting a talking to when things go wrong he will learn. One thing is sure, he's better than Delaney.

I'm not 'he came through the academy he can't do any wrong' type either, plenty of players have come through our academy who aren't good enough, one being our fourth choice CB in Jack Ainsley, that gives me cause for concern if we have injuries. I have also been doubtful about Hyams abilities, he seems to have too many errors with misplaced passes but they tell me he was really good yesterday so let's hope he's picking his game up.

I think however that people should get off the players back if they make a mistake, especially the youngsters as it can't help their confidence. I can't imagine I'd feel too good about playing in front of 19,000 people all groaning if I made a mistake, it would make me nervous every time I went anywhere near the ball.

I sort of get what you're saying, but Jack Charlton wasn't a footballer either and look at his career. I think that there have been many good centre backs who aren't "footballers."
