I'm sad too, I was like a little boy when I caught the steam train from Sherringham to Holt. Which is well worth doing if you haven't already done so.

It's only about 20 minutes but it's worth doing, lovely old fashion carriages too. There was a beer festival at Sheringham station the day I went too, which I'm sure enhanced the experience.

Have you Googled Nenta travel? They organise days out on steam trains coupled to the old Pullman (Orient Express) carriages. Lady Surfer has been on a couple of these days out and says they are wonderful.

A must-do is the Settle to Carlisle line - wonderful, and don't forget to lean out of the window when going over the famous Ribbleshead Viaduct! (also well worth walking/cycling/driving to, for the view from the ground)

me too - he's one of that very rare breed (endangered species) - 'intelligent thoughtful Torius politico' - quite apart from his railway enthusiasm (did you see C4's 'Renovation Man' last week? brilliant, well worth watching on catchup if not).

A fairly elderly train enthusiast couple renovated the disused Settle trackside water tower (originally required to load into the steamtrains but later used for stabling horses!) into a home, inventively making a living space on the top as well where the tank had been. As it was 'Portillo's letter' which had effectively saved the line, he came along for the champagne party at the finish to kinda complete the thing!

You are not sad -
Steam locomotives are an essential part of the hisory of industrialisation and the beginning of the possibility of the movement of labour which made the industrial revolution so important in the history of mankind.

Steam trains are great.

My Grandad was a signalman for 40 years in Cornwall in the steam era.

He bought the house off the railway when they stopped running trains and my Aunty still lives in the house now.

If anyone's familiar with the Bodmin & Wenford Railway, it's near there.
