| Great Inventions on BBC2 - great! but why don't RR make cars any more? 13:32 - Feb 3 with 894 views | Ryorry | Fantastic series - this week was locomotion - steamtrains, cars, jetplanes. Filmed in the absolutely awesome engine room at Rolls Royce, Derby. Towards the end tho prog said I think (haven't replayed) that RR now exclusively makes jet engines and has stopped making cars? Despite the recession, surely there'll always be wealthy people who want and can afford one? so it seems a real shame that they don't boost British industry and help themselves to more cash along the way, by still making them. Can anyone enlighten me? | |

Nope. Most (and almost all of the large) RR aero engines are still made in Derby. The German operation was started as a joint venture with BMW to build engines for business jets and small regional aircraft, which RR now fully owns. BMW took a small share in RR in exchange. The German operation is less than a fifth the size of Derby. RR Canada has been around for quite a while, and a lot of the Energy turbines are over there. Marine turbines, however, remain in the UK. Of course, you could mention the Indianapolis operation (they took over Allison back in the 1990s), the Singapore factory (opened last year) - but these are all owned by the Rolls-Royce group, headquartered in London. Are they British? Yes.

The mini of course, being made by BMW in the BMW plant at Cowley, Oxford. Which is mostly by poles and Albanians. :-)

And I with my lovely scruffy Landrover! They're so popular and such a global success these days, you kinda wonder if they'll become the 21st C RR equivalent company in their status.

Vauxhall is in resurgence at the moment, as are jaguar land rover, until they goto India in about 3 years. Nissan are doing quite well. Honda are bumping along and have been for a while. Ford are properly knackered.

What I could never work out is why Tata have been able to make a go of Jaguar Land Rover, when Ford with all their infrastructure and expertise could not. Perhaps it wasn't the expertise that JLR needed... As for the OP, I think RR are better off out of cars (although they have just bought half of one the the world's largest diesel engine manufacturers). In fact the RR group as is haven't made cars since the 70s - the RR badge and front grill were essentially used under license. Think it was part of Vickers for a bit if I recall. VW bought out what they thought was RR Cars the Crewe plant), but that didn't have the absolute rights to the name - hence why VW now make Bentleys.

Interesting question. I was at haylewood a few months back talking to jlrs production director. Basically they de unionised the plant, cut it right back, standardised everything and started again. The XF was basically their launch pad. They gave discounted corporate rates out, got it into the marketplace. A mix of improved efficiency, low op costs and market share. However I understand that they'll leave the uk before too long. That will not go down well

Still got a big base in Cheshire relating to jet engines with an eye on the military I think.

Think there will be plenty of political pressure from all sides if they do up sticks completely (plenty of marginals around there), and I'm not sure how the market would react to a Jaguar built in India. Their current market is quality and corporate, and they do it very well - the XF is a superb car, and I'm sure the Range Rover and Evoque are nice enough if you like that sort of thing. But can you see a mid exec buying an Indian-built XF over a German BMW 5-series, or a League 1 footballer buying a Range Rover Sport from Bangalore? Not sure: they may be every inch as good as product from Solihull, but image is vital in those markets. They'll need to be careful I think.

I know they're shifting their parts business already. I agree, the biggest appeal is the "Britishness "

Derby's the hub - but locally we have JCB, Bombardier and Toyota too. Quite a bit of 'making stuff' industry round here, thankfully. There is a branch of RR in Warrington these days - part of the Civil Nuclear business, I think, so you may have seen that. There's also a small plant in southern Manchester which I think is part of the industrial energy side.

Well I live outside the original factory site in M15 but there's nothing but flats here now! Plus two roads named after them.
