Car Tax 15:00 - Jan 16 with 2116 viewsCOYBitfc

Am I right in saying it is going to change from April this year? Seen a few stories reporting it will but cannot work out if changes are for new cars bought after April only?

Anyone clued up on it?

I think there swingeing increases on new cars of the sort people in need of self-validation buy. Smaller increases for those who buy sensible cars. I think most of the changes apply to brand new cars registered after 1 April 17.

Basically, rates are going up, and even low emissions cars will be subject. So if I replace my little Fiesta (currently zero tax), I will have to pay, I think £140.

Govt was losing too much revenue through low emissions cars being bought. They could have enforced payment for effectively (there's very high avoidance, esp in a post-tax disc era). They could have celebrated the success of was was touted as a green policy, with so many people swapping to lower emission vehicles.

But no. A nice stealth tax is the answer.

They made it a carbon tax then realised that when you tax a 'vice' downwards you lose revenue. The eejits.

Not to mention the shenanigans which led to diesels being sold as a (lower tax) greener alternative which, when exposed, made a mockery of the system.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

I rode all last winter but bottled out this year and bought a small car. Just too old to be riding in freezing temperatures...

Waiting for spring when my car becomes redundant once more.

Yes, the new tax laws only apply to any car registered after I believe April 1st.
You will lose the free years tax you get with a new car unless it's electric or virtually emissions free so that's £140 straight away before you drive off the forecourt plus it's a minimum of £140 tax a year!

Even when you feel down always remember its just a game.

You'll be ok, it's only new cars registered after the beginning of April this year that get the new tax regime.

I hear they are considering bringing back the paper tax disc as they are losing millions of pounds in revenue.
