Fake News on 22:22 - Jan 16 with 2974 views | LankHenners | People love phrases these days. Especially ones that cover something fairly nuanced or complex as it makes them seem relatively clever, as they're often used by people who don't have the capacity to think for themselves so just stick all these terms in a blender in their head and vomit them out onto Twitter and suchlike.

But what about actual news that is fake though? You know, like the stuff made up on FB. What to call that? Just lies I suppose, as MER suggests. But some are made to look like news items/reputable articles. I though Fake News suited those quite well tbh.

Fake News on 05:42 - Jan 17 with 2783 views | wkj | Fake news confuses me as a term, it's leveled at Satire. Anyone who reads Suffolk Gazette (and websites of that sort) and can not tell that its Satire probably need a hug. The only one thing I have agreed with Trump on is that Buzzfeed is a heap of garbage... To me, that site is a Fake News Agency. A website that got famous by stealing content and not crediting other people for it, then suddenly deciding it's a news agency

I don't think that's quite true about Buzzfeed; it's certainly how they built up name recognition but they have evolved that onto some proper journalism. For example: https://www.buzzfeed.com/albertonardelli/italys-most-popular-political-party-is- As for 'Fake News', I think it's reasonably clear what that is. Made up news designed to look like it's from a reputable source and designed to be shared by those whose prejudices it confirms.

That's my point though. "Fake News" is just a 'modern name' given to this nonsense trotted out by campaigners to the gullible. Most know it's fake, but because it comes from a source that they worship/believe they lap it up.

Propaganda is an English word. It's what Danny Dyer has when he wants to examine something closely.

Absolutely spot on. It is my belief that reality as brought to us through traditional media itself has been undermined for some time - and now that normal people with "accepted" mainstream views are realising this to be true, we can conclude that "the news" as we have known it for the last generation is in absolute disarray. Here's to more critical investigative journalism and with it a more believable reality and future.

And to suggest that Trump got elected because of Russian hacking / fake news is preposterous as well. Crikey, where are all these good posters suddenly coming from? "IN JANUARY 1961, Dwight Eisenhower delivered his farewell address after serving two terms as U.S. president; the five-star general chose to warn Americans of this specific threat to democracy: βIn the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.β and "... cheering for the CIA and its shadowy allies to unilaterally subvert the U.S. election and impose its own policy dictates on the elected president is both warped and self-destructive. Empowering the very entities that have produced the most shameful atrocities and systemic deceit over the last six decades is desperation of the worst kind. Demanding that evidence-free, anonymous assertions be instantly venerated as Truth β despite emanating from the very precincts designed to propagandize and lie β is an assault on journalism, democracy, and basic human rationality. And casually branding domestic adversaries who refuse to go along as traitors and disloyal foreign operatives is morally bankrupt and certain to backfire on those doing it." https://theintercept.com/2017/01/11/the-deep-state-goes-to-war-with-president-el
