But if he were to go, who do we get in? It's very hard to attract a decent manager from the Lower leagues at this stage of the season as by definition, their clubs will be very reluctant to let them go as they will be in their own promotion / play-off battles.

If we change manager now it will be for someone equally experienced who can make do on a small budget, we'll just repeat the same pattern in 18 months. There's a small chance ME will be able to take a longer-term approach in the Summer.
Rowett would at least be a change but, as you say, not much different in the longer-term. For all his failings as a manager, I would consider Mowbray purely because he might be able to bring back some identity to the club but it would probably end badly too.

I would be more than happy with Nigel Pearson, has Championship know how and did a fantastic job with Leicester.
Currently out of work to, so now fee required.
On the other hand, I would be even more than happy with a younger manager/coach such as the Cowley brothers last night, young, hungry and ambitious. I would be more than happy to have those for 4/5 years or so, and for them to move to a bigger club, that would mean that would have done something right at Town.
