If you were prime minister what trivial laws/initiatives would you bring in? on 00:04 - Feb 21 by flashblue | Just to come back on these points Scrapping all benefits in favour of a universal basic income is what I said. So we pay everyone rich or poor an income of about £6K per annum and do away with benefits and means testing. Saves a huge amount in administration and provides a dignified minimum standard for everyone. Benefits system is a joke. Get rid. Prescribing heroin for addicts is a no brainier. It immediately puts all heroin dealers out of business, and takes this awful drug off the streets. This means fewer future addicts. Addicts can lead a relatively normal life. They can work, maintain a stable home. They do not need to lead a life of crime. The crime rate reduces. Families are not broken up. The problem is manageable. It is then easier for users to quit. Online porn should be prevented. Does not give kids the correct message. As a minimum it should be banned by default. If a user wishes to opt in to porn, they should have to do so in writing with the explicit understanding that they are responsible for the potential publication of it to children, with criminal sanctions if they do so. Gambling is a disease. Unfortunately most people believe it is a bit of fun - it's pretty sad. You can tell just by looking on this forum, that a lot of people have a problem. |
The gambling bit is complete nonsense. For most of us it is a bit of fun. For many of us it's also a way to make money via matched betting. What the likes of you and Benters don't seem to understand is that not everyone is going to get addicted. It's the same with drinking. Look at the Norwich thread on this forum. It seems less about the game and more about how much alcohol they can cram in before the game. If I was told I could never drink again i'd be mildly disappointed for about 10 minutes. Not everything that can be addictive is addictive to everyone. Perhaps you should stop trying to push your beliefs on to everyone else and instead target gambling advertising or FOBT machines which many of us would support. [Post edited 21 Feb 2017 14:07]

I think one problem with how "antis" view gambling is that they lump it all together as one thing. Those of us who actually know something about it know that there's a world of difference between, e.g., the evil Fixed Odds Betting Terminals (FOBTs) which are without skill, incredibly addictive, and dangerous therefore; other gambling in games of pure chance such as roulette, scratch-cards & of course the lotto etc; matched betting (which isn't gambling at all, just trading - something people also do in backing & laying on the exchanges for a guaranteed profit) - and gambling on horseracing, which involves huge elements of knowledge, skill and experience, and in that is very little different to gambling on the Stock Exchange, which is regarded as a perfectly respectable activity.

Agreed. It always tends to be people who have seen one person with a problem who then want to try and force their beliefs on to everyone. FOBT machines are lethal. They should have a £50 loss limit per hour and you should have to register for a card to play them. The problem with them is that people chase losses. We've all been there. I've had a nasty loss on blackjack after winning small amounts repeatedly when playing for fun using 'perfect strategy' which is bloody stupid when you think about it as they have a built in advantage so even perfect strategy is just a way to minimise losses, not a way to win. My point is that I learn from that and now I don't play blackjack unless I have the advantage via a matched betting bonus. FOBTS + easy access + chasing = horrible outcomes.

I think the problem is that all betting is easy access now, and betting is a vice. Every other vice is made more difficult, by taxes, licencing laws, social stigmas etc, whereas the opposite happens with betting. It makes it easier for problem gamblers to get too deep in the hole before anyone notices and that is wrong for me.

I completely agree. You're not suggesting we ban it though. I would be fully supportive of various measures as long as they are actually helpful. Banning gambling ads during sporting event for example is a big one i'd support.

As I said earlier in the thread, I agree with a limit to gambling advertising makes sense. But the difference between that and banning gambling completely is poles apart

1. Impose a tax on those who have loud cars and cause noise pollution 2. Force Starbucks/Costa/Amazon to pay tax and reinvest that into improving the NHS 3. Having a fairer and less strict welfare state. Stop demonising those on welfare. Give it to people who need it and stop the unnecessary and distressing medicals for those on ESA or a medically assessed benefit. For jobseekers, stop with the sanctions. It makes their situation worse and can cause crime. Create work replacements which will allow them to demonstrate their skills and get employed 4. Have free university education for families that have an income less than £16,000 a year. 5. Children have a qualification in what I would entitle Household Living and Financial Management when they leave school so they know how to manage their money and save for a rainy day.

There's certainly too much advertising re gambling I agree. However, as I've said a few times before - internet gambling enables me to bet less - because I can stake incredibly small amounts (£0.25p e/w is possible, tho my usual stake is £0.50 e/w) which means if I want to spread my risk and back 10 horses in the big races on a Saturday, I need spend no more than £10. I'd feel embarrassed to stake like that in a bookie's (tho of course I shouldn't), even if they would accept it. Telephone betting is a minimum of £10/call. [Post edited 21 Feb 2017 20:28]

If you were prime minister what trivial laws/initiatives would you bring in? on 20:50 - Feb 19 by J2BLUE | I have loads of these...here is a small sample... Teach financial education in schools The final hour of Wednesday and Thursday, and the final two hours of Friday for school kids would be reading time. No one is paying attention on Friday afternoon so let kids read. If they want to be a pilot read about planes, if they want to be a doctor read a medical text book etc. Or fiction. Just read and learn. Nothing improves your writing and vocabulary like reading. Provide proper full support for all returning military personnel and make sure that all serving personnel have everything they need to remain safe and do their job properly. Change RE to REE - Religious Education and Evolution. Teach it from the start of secondary school and let kids make their own mind up. Far more severe punishments for cruelty to animals. Free lights, helmets and high vis jackets for cyclists for their own safety and for doing their part to keep themselves fit and being environmentally friendly. A couple of controversial ones which have little chance of being passed... Ban all retired people from supermarkets at weekends. It's always jam packed and staying out of the supermarket for a couple of days won't kill them. Ban all military involvement in sporting events. I just don't like it. I think it helps glorify the military and it's not needed. |
This was great until I got to the controversial bit

I have to completely disagree on the gambling one. The percentage of problem gamblers to everyone else is extremely tiny. Less than 1%. Because a small amount of people percentage wise have a problem, the entire thing should be banned? By that principle, we should ban alcohol as well then surely? I can understand the legalising of some drugs. But not heroine. Heroine addicts being supplied for free on the NHS would be the most ridiculous thing of all time.

Methadone is prescribed to addicts to help wean them off smack. The levels are monitored and the dosage reduced over time. Addicts have to attend counselling and change their lifestyle habnits. Completely different to making heroine available freely by the NHS. Where is the incentive to give it up?

I'm not advocating any particular drugs policy, I don't know enough the topic to do so. I mentioned it because it didn't seem clear that the people arguing knew how heroine addiction was treated currently.
