If you were prime minister what trivial laws/initiatives would you bring in? 13:43 - Feb 18 with 27838 viewsTractorWood

I'll start:

1. No keypad tones are allowed on phones in any public situation. £500 fine
2. Physical cash to be phased out.
3. Nationwide education on how to use the word done.

Yes, because all it is doing is making gambling more difficult to do, not banning it.

There isn't a law that can be passed to do with any vice that doesn't affect those that do it responsibly.

EDIT - How about a compromise where physical money has to be paid into an online account? i.e. you take your money to the bookies to have in an account and then can do it online?
[Post edited 22 Feb 2017 11:04]

It would make it impossible for tens of thousands of people like myself and my racing forum members because of either sheer distance, lack of transport or disability etc.

I note your later edit, not sure how many of my members would be able/willing to do that - I'd certainly find it a massive inconvenience if not impossible myself, particularly since I think b365 (my regular bookie with best prices) don't have actual shops. As I'm not willing to fork out £20-30 (or whatever) every month to RUK to watch races, stopping online gambling would also stop me watching horseracing, as I'd no longer be entitled to watch the live stream that you get for free if you've bet £1 or more with some online bookies.

As it is there are already restrictions to signing up with bookies online - you have to send two forms of ID (iirc) but certainly including either your passport or maybe photo driving licence, can't remember re the latter; fill out a lengthy form, link bank account etc. It's pretty tedious & requires a fair bit of time to get approved.

"you may potentially be a problem gambler."

Yeah, that's why I've spent no more than about £10 a week on it for the past 10 years without ever increasing that.

You just summed up exactly the sheer judgemental arrogance and ignorance of some antis.

Haven't really read this thread but I think gambling is a curse. I don't think it should be banned but it should be more restricted.

The betting adverts which seem to be played on TV every 5 mins is abhorrent. I feel sorry for people with a gambling problem.

I read recently why there are so many betting shops of the same company so close to each other. From what I understand a betting shop can only have three fruit machines per store and this is where they make most of their money. The solution? Open three shops in the same street.

Utterly immoral.

Which we entirely agree with. I thought they were allowed four but even if it's three I still agree entirely.

We're on the same side. Ryorry likes 50p e/w on the horses. I like the odd tenner on football and matched betting. We aren't your problem.

Truly impaired.

Your compromise wouldn't make any difference in some respects. Once you have an account balance it's digital. This is why casinos use chips and now lots of slots use 'points' rather than money. You can now open up a game to see you have 3000 points rather than £30. It's much easier to be 1000 points a spin than bet £1 per spin.

One good thing your idea would do though is stop instant deposits to chase losses.

Truly impaired.

" getting needlessly aggressive with people in what was an interesting discussion before you decided to turn it into your latest online conflict."

As in the past, this is only an "online conflict" in the derogatory sense that you are trying to smear me with, in that I'm defending myself against false accusations. I will never lie down and accept mud thrown at me where it's totally unjustified, without defending myself. Sadly you and a handful of others obviously construe that defending myself (sometimes in an obviously annoyed tone I agree, but I've seen far, far worse on here pass thousands of times without anyone turning a hair) is somehow "aggressive" - and so the myth is perpetuated.

In your haste to start with the ad hominem attack on me, you obviously failed to notice that I was the first person to reply to the thread, on p1. As I'm sure any neutral outsider would observe if they read the thread, the discussion was indeed going along in an interesting and civil manner - until you yourself lobbed in misrepresentation of, & accusation at me, in a "rabidly aggressive" manner.

Please point out exactly where I myself have been "rabid" or "aggressive", cheers.

Ahh the classic protesting too much line. People make accusations, if you dare defend yourself you're protesting too much.

Some people just like a good witch hunt I guess. I look forward to all of you being so judgemental next time someone mentions alcohol or drugs. Oh yes, that's different isn't it, I forgot

You can make a point about instant access and access from home but lets be honest, it's not hard to maintain a drinking problem in this day and age with alcohol sold widely and cheaply so lets be fair about it.

I admire you still bothering to be honest. I typed a reply to Joe and then thought I can't be bothered and deleted it.

Luckily for us gambling is not going anywhere. We all appreciate that some people have a problem and i'm sure we would support any measures to help people. My card idea was based on people not being able to switch machines to carry on playing. Near me there are three bookies within a 3 minute walk. That's 12x £50 if my idea was brought in without the card. I also said £50 because given an hour cooling off period most people would accept it and walk away. When these machines take debit cards and have no loss limits they are lethal. All we can do is support people when they try to tackle the actual issues around gambling and ignore the hysteria.

J2 - You're obviously well aware of my views on online gambling - from a selfish perspective, the more online gambling, the better, as far as I'm concerned.

it's not all about me tho - there is far, far, far too much emphasis placed on online betting now - absolutely any sporting event is surrounded with bookie adverts. It's not on; in respect of advertising, bookies are to modern sport what tobacco companies were to 80s sport.

Online gambling removes the 'realness' of money - I've had the fortune to walk out of Ascot and Newmarket on a couple of occasions with a wallet full of £20 notes; feeling invincible.

I don't get anything like that same feeling with online gambling; it's just monopoly money, you know? It's ridiculously easy to click a tab and move from the Sportbook to the Casino, and punt cash through on a slot machine (which are the real villains in this instance).

Madness, really. Slots are just random number generators - shove some flashing lights and a cheesy tune on them, and everyone goes dizzy for them.

In summary, all bookies are scumbags.

So I'm "aggressive" for being annoyed at your sheer judgementalism in calling me a "potential problem gambler" - but when I point out that I'm very obviously not, given my history, you get abusive, rubbbish my politeness at lightheartedly answering your point re I should leave it there and explanation that I was indeed doing so, and generally behave in a way that some might desribe as bullying.

I'd support that, for many reasons. The biggest two would be people with a problem watching something like football and seeing the adverts and kids seeing them as well. It would be interesting to see if there are gambling ads during shows aimed at kids like Soccer AM.

Oh and one more thing, if any of you want to do something about gambling advertising like start a government petition rather than just talking about it i'm sure me and Ryorry would be two of the first to sign it.

"As it is there are already restrictions to signing up with bookies online"

I think you'd be surprised. When I did a bit of matched betting last year I managed to sign up with 20 bookies in the space of a few days without sending one piece of ID out, or even giving details of my ID.

So that point isn't valid.
