I have a domain, by means of an online portfolio for work. I pay around £30/year, which is higher than I believe it should be. An additional £3 a month through google for email addresses attached to the domain, accessed through gmail. Found it all fairly straightforward, and had / have no idea what I'm doing most of the time.
Buying a domain... on 19:11 - Feb 19 with 2485 views | giant_stow | Buy a domain and then that needs to be pointed to a Web server which hosts the site files. If you don't fancy that, buy a domain and Web hosting together from the same provider - they'll often chuck in some email accounts too. Edit, or what's the specific bit you don't get? I started reading a Do's and Don't page about it and they were talking about checking the history of the domain?? Registering key words? Servers? And when I type in "buy a domain" there are that many places to do it I'm not sure which to go with!?! Is there a one-stop shop where I can pay, get the domain, emails, servers etc?

Yeah there's loads of one stop shop type places. If you're setting up a site, what do you plan to use for it? If WordPress for example, Google best UK WordPress hosting providers (best to host a site in the same country as your audience at least). Should cost anywhere from 30 p.a or up to 100 for basic hosting. But paying.more will tend to mean a better faster server. Fasthosts host twtd and do all in deals, or another one I've used but better quality is called clook.com - smaller company, charge a bit morr but better value. [Post edited 19 Feb 2017 19:35]

Buying a domain... on 19:52 - Feb 19 with 2330 views | GodBlue | I tend to use one.com when building sites for people. It's about £12 for a .co.uk and their basic hosting package (which I suspect will be more than enough) for the first year, then it's about £23 a year after that. .com domains are about £10 a year, if memory serves. They offer loads of bolt ons, but the basic pack includes a sql database if you need it for anything like a forum etc, plus email, I think.

Thanks Ullaa, going to have a look now. I'll be getting someone to design site for me, only need a basic setup, just an About page, contact and maybe two others.

Squarespace is excellent if you don't want to do any coding yourself. They will also provide a domain as part of the package. SB

Yeah squarespace has some nice pre-designed templates to use, for sure. Much better than Wix - their system is fiddly and annoying, although if you battle through that, you can get something alright.
