If NASA make some mega announcement about finding life on other planets etc., this afternoon or indeed at any point in the future, how will this affect religions ??

Discuss.

What if we received a radio transmission of some aliens singing kumbaya or something?

id love for aliens to be singing us the theme tune to coronation street or something. that would be brililant first contact.

we'd sing the theme tune back to home and away, and inadvertantly start an intergalatic war.

howefer i cant pick up Radio 4 in my kitchen, so i doubt this is true

announcement at 1 ESt (6pm GMT) from Nasa about exoplanets

Probably they have found a few in "goldilocks zone" possibly managed to detect water

Doubt they will have detected water. Need a much bigger telescope such as the James Webb in order to analyse the atmosphere.

Would be an amazing discovery though.

Probably just another few thousand exoplanets added to the list.

Nearly 40% in the US don't accept evolution. ...

Which is why it's most dangerous when, as the Republican bedrock, they now control congress, the senate and can't even see most of the problems with their president. Not to mention the conservative-leaning Supreme Court.

In all honesty, it's not all that far off the classic fundamentalism of regimes like Iran and Saudi Arabia.

It's miles away from those regimes.

What is it with Trump that makes people resort to ridiculous hyperbole? Is it a quest for uppies?

Trump is a loon and wholly unsuited to be US president, but to label all the US government as not far off fundamental despotic regimes is just silly.

Think it's 6PM UK time. They have a media embargo on it all until the press conference. Previous announcements they have made have snuck out before on certain websites/work of mouth but nothing on this one. Probably means nothing however.

Surely only because of the population density of non-fundamentalists?

Support for stuff that is typically held up as Islamic fundamentalism such as torture, the death penalty etc. Religious adherence, and using religious interpretation to educate and govern is all fairly standard stuff amongst those in the "bible belt" isn't it?

The reality is merely stopping that taking hold in the same way surely? If you had the same levels of cultural saturation in America would it be all that different? I think it's possible at least.

The fact that Trump believes NASA has made up global warming with the Russians, means if they did announce they found aliens (they haven't) he wouldn't believe them any way.

Its pretty worrying.
