Burning your bridges 14:18 - Feb 22 with 4255 viewsRoyKeanesDog

To any younger, or indeed older posters too, I can not emphasise the value that leaving workplaces on amicable terms has.

Last year I was made redundant from a job after just a couple of months, not due to my performance. The company just had to make cutbacks and it was a case of last in first out. Despite them leaving me jobless I took it well and wished them the best for the future. I didn't have the best of luck since then and have had to job hop from temporary positions to places that closed down.

Finding a new role that ticked all the boxes for me was very difficult, and I came very close to taking something that I wasn't keen on at all. Out of the blue yesterday I got a call back from the original company offering me an improved role as they were in a better position.

That's the 3rd employer in my life that I have gone back to now, and if I was ever in the dogpoo big time, they are 3 employers who I would be able to turn to in order to help me out.

If I could give one piece of advice to people it would be don't burn your bridges.

Yes, good advice. Knowing when to leave can also be a good skill, too.

This.

I used to hate people wearing those things in HMV. I'd be browsing through the racks and find myself getting hit in the back with one.

I used to show these fookers my displeasure in no uncertain terms.

Did you cycle straight at them?

Edit; I forgot, you run at people and not cycle at them.

You wear a backpack. I fooking hate those. Ignorant fookers forget they have them on in tight spaces.

Yeah, everyone's the same. Obviously.

He wears it on the tube. He downvoted my "Things that should be banned" post about backpacks on the tube.

Dolly; wear it until you get on the tube and then take it off while you are on it, thus not getting on everyones t1ts.

What if I'm on a fairly empty tube and not near anyone? Do I still need to follow your rules?

How should I carry my stuff? You've still not managed to answer this point.

I would also add the main reason I have a backpack is I cycle.

Yes. I'm the sort of bloke who would tut when hit with a moron's backpack.

It's happened more than once. The first time I told the bloke to be more bloody careful. The second time I put a foot out so he tripped up.

As if some student with a backpack is going to turn around and say anything.

Different people obviously.

Wow. Your reaction to someone accidentally knocking you with their bag was violence?

Bit ott wasn't it?

Tripping someone up in a store? Yeah, I'd say so. What if they fell and hit their head on a fixture?

FFS Dollers he only stumbled a couple of steps. I didn't take him out like Chopper Harris on George Best.

Besides, had he hit his head it would have bounced of the over sized back pack and he would have learned a salutary lesson.

Yes. See my reply above. If he'd died of a head injury as he fell you'd be locked up.

It was an accident FFS. You don't sound a very tolerant person. If an old lady knocked you with her bag would you trip her up too or is it just students? Maybe kick her arthritic hip while she's down?

I thought you were generally alright Glassers, but you sound a bit of an arsehole. If he'd done it on purpose I'd understand a bit more.

If you're on a fairly empty tube, you can sit down and hold said backpack; therefore, there is no problem.

If you're wearing it on a crowded tube, that's poor show, for the reasons previously alluded to.

Most of these guys with backpacks must bump into people constantly so it is pig ignorance.

Old lady's would be treated with the due respect their age and sex deserves.

As for banging his head? God help you when you have kids Dollers. They fall and bang their heads all the time. The way you are talking you'd cushion every wall and surface.

But when you trip someone up you do realise they can fall rather than just stumble?

There are plenty of times when there's no seat but plenty of room to stand without a rucksack getting in anyone's way. If it's rammed I take it off and hold it down by my legs.

No.

I certainly wouldn't trip someone up for accidentally knocking me with their bag though. Having kids has nothing to do with it.

So several places closed down after they employed you? Hmm.

"I came very close to taking something that I wasn't keen on at all."

Yeah, the game's not for everyone

Virtually all of my former employers have ceased to exist or, in one case, pulled out of the UK. Apart from one, a chip shop where I worked as a student, which has just reopened following a major fire.

Probably safer for everyone if I stay self-employed.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

The last company I worked for got a new payroll system towards the end. You could simply tick do not re-employ (with valid reason) and it would show up if they applied in any of the other 1200 odd pubs they own.

I had a chef leave a 3am in the morning a few months back (no notice.) Someone called me to see if I'd give him a reference last week!!

Couldn't agree more.

Last year I left a job I have been in 5 years just purely for a different scene, I was getting a bit bored etc.

After a month at this new job, they had little work for me, I was really bored. I don't think they really had a job there for me full-time. Without going into it, it was just not a right fit. (some people will say a month is not enough time, but we will just have to disagree on that!)

However, I spoke with my previous boss and I told him what was going on. He said if I wanted to come back I would have an improved role and a bit more wage. I accepted and now I am back where I used to work, enjoying it more.

You never know when you will need people!
