Book thread: What is everyone reading at the moment? 13:09 - Feb 28 with 8219 viewsSteve_M

Inspired by the Waterstones thread, an occasional reprise for one of the more interesting topics on here.* I'm currently reading the Murhen and Thijssen book which is well recommended for any Town fans but I'm considering what to read next.

A couple of very recent books which I recommend:

Pour Me. AA Gill.
Not really an autobiography but an excellently written and honest account of alcoholism and how he made a success of the second half of his life. It's not a 'look at me' type book or about how he got over it rather that he did. Knowing that he has died since writing it, actually makes the recovery life-affirming.

Sapiens. Yuval Noah Harari.
A very long-range view of the development of Homo sapiens and why our species dominates the world. It's full of challenging and thought-provoking assertions and arguments, not of all of which I agree with but many of which challenge conventional thinking.

This is a VERY welcome thread. I'm trying to get through 40 or so books this year and am a little behind... So any recommendations will go down very well.

I've seen the Sapiens book and was tempted. I may check that out. I didn't much like AA Gill though, so not sure I'll bother with that.

So far this year I've read mostly read non-fiction...

Seinfeldia - a history of Seinfeld, its cultural impact etc. Not bad. The first 2/3 are excellent for anyone into Seinfeld, but it that goes off the rails a bit...
A Life In Parts - Bryan Cranston - thoroughly entertaining read for anyone interested in him. Saw him at a signing/interview event before Xmas and he was really engaging. Came across very well. Worth a read.
Game Changers - the Muhren/Thijssen book. I'm a bit of a Thijssen fan and loved this. Read it in a weekend, pretty much. Great book.
Thatcher Stole My Trousers - Alexei Sayle - second memoir from Alexei. A lot of fun, very enjoyable.

Currently flipping between these two:
What Goes Around - the memoir of a life of a London cycle courier. Really great read.
The Field Of The Cloth Of Gold - I just LOVE Magnus Mills.

Edit: A Spectator piece on Magnus Mills, for anyone interested. He's books are just joyous.

Very similar, I am at about the same point in the book as the TV drama has got to and the TV follows the plot in the book very closely.

This got a good review on Front Row last night, and think I'll probably get it

"Critically acclaimed writer Ross Raisin talks about his new novel 'A Natural', which is about a young footballer whose dreams of reaching the upper leagues are rapidly fading and whose identity is conflicted."

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08g2tlb

The one criticism the interviewer had was that he got no sense of "the joy of playing professionally."
Maybe the author was trying to say there isn't much?!

Sapiens is a very good read. Bit depressing but very much a step back and see where we're heading picture of mankind.

I heard AA Gill's book was very good but not had the chance yet.

Otherwise, I'm re-reading Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera. Which is very insightful, sad and funny - often at the same time.

"Stoner" by John Williams. Review here: https://www.theguardian.com/books/2013/dec/13/stoner-john-williams-julian-barnes

After that I'm going to read Phillip Roth's "The Plot Against America" as it seems kind of appropriate right now. http://www.newyorker.com/culture/cultural-comment/the-frightening-lessons-of-phi

Half-way through Henry Blofeld's autobiography - he's from every bit an upper-class background as he sounds, although charming enough about it.

Next up is Frans & Arnold's book.

Stoner is a special book. Incredible that it was so overlooked for so long.

I just picked up It Can't Happen Here by Sinclair Lewis, which similarly to Roth's novel seems to predict what we're currently seeing in the US.

Peter Hook's memoirs of New Order "Substance". When I was obsessed by this band throughout the 80's, I only had the music and a rare tv appearance to keep me going. This is a warts 'n' all account of what was going on behind the scenes. Could be turned into a film even funnier than 24 Hour Party People. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes music biogs regardless of whether they like New Order.

I'm reading a book by Judy Marks - Howards wife.

Gotta say it's so boring, it's really doing my nut in but I have to finish it.

Fascinating read if you have an interest in high performance sport or of psychology in general.
Would recommend this to any of our current squad (and coaching staff) as well

I know lots of people are a fan of it but I thought Mr. Nice was an awful read. Didn't ring true as autobiography and too sluggish and self-regarding for fiction.

I'm not a big fan of Roth, but that's the best of his that I've read. I heard an interesting interview with him during the run up to the US elections, drawing the obvious parallels.

Currently reading Richard Adam's Shardick, which I got on a whim when his death was announced.

I am just finishing Arnold and Frans's book but I came across this little beauty the other week. You can read it in one sitting, but it is best eaten in small morsels...

Here's the publisher's blurb, which is good enough...

"Overpaid players. Sunday lunchtime kick-offs. Absurd ticket prices. Non-black boots. Football's menu of ills is long. Where has the joy gone? Why do we bother? Saturday, 3pm offers a glorious antidote. It is here to remind you that football can still sing to your heart.

"Warm, heartfelt and witty, here are fifty short essays of prose poetry dedicated to what is good in the game. These are not wallowing nostalgia; they are things that remain sweet and right: seeing a ground from the train, brackets on vidiprinters, the ball hitting the bar, Jimmy Armfield's voice, listening to the results in a traffic jam, football towns and autograph-hunters. This is fan culture at its finest, words to transport you somewhere else and identify with, words to hide away in a pub and luxuriate in.

"Saturday, 3pm is a book of love letters to football and a clarion call, helping us find the romance in the game all over again."

That's a fair pile of assumptions you've jumped to there.....
