I had one in 1904-05. Sat next to some pigs and a chicken as it was all fields back then. Porky forgot to buy Gold Card Membership so had to relocate to the cowshed when Beccles Caxton came down. Section 6 were trying to sing songs about Einstein to the tune of Sloop John B but they never caught on. Turnstiles were in need of painting iirc.

In the days of the old "chicken run" stand on the East side of the ground, Portman Road had a pretty low seating capacity. When we returned to the 1st Division in 1968-69, all seats were sold to season ticket holders for the first 2 seasons. This probably prompted the building of the new Portman Stand, later renamed the Cobbold Stand. |  |

Oh, ok - a little before my time. I see that official capacity reached 31,000 in 1961 & while we didn't quite hit it, we came a bit close a few times in the Championship season & no wonder they might have shut the terrace gates in those days which was, as you say, rather random. | |

The record crowd stood at 28194 from 1939 until it was broken against Spurs in 1961 with 28778 in there.Broken again at Easter 1962 against Arsenal with 30649. |  | | |
