Porky forgot to buy Gold Card Membership so had to relocate to the cowshed when Beccles Caxton came down. Section 6 were trying to sing songs about Einstein to the tune of Sloop John B but they never caught on. Turnstiles were in need of painting iirc. TWTD. [Post edited 14 Mar 2017 15:27]

That one is Complementary. Now there is an ides to promote larger attendances. I think that is what happens at Derby, because, as Benters never fails to point out, they often get over 30,000,

I was at Portman Road for 25 years, waiting for the football to arrive.

You will carry on waiting until McCarthy goes.
When were season tickets first issued at ITFC? on 17:36 - Mar 14 with 1682 views | Radlett_blue | In the days of the old "chicken run" stand on the East side of the ground, Portman Road had a pretty low seating capacity. When we returned to the 1st Division in 1968-69, all seats were sold to season ticket holders for the first 2 seasons. This probably prompted the building of the new Portman Stand, later renamed the Cobbold Stand.

In the 50s the West stand seating only stretched to about half the length of the pitch.

When we were in the First Division the ground was pretty full. They would often close the gates when there were not many more than 25,000 inside.

When was that? Ground capacity was close to 30,000 before the chicken run was in place, with us averaging 20,000 in D1, with the capacity only really tested against Man Utd. I was locked out when we lost at home to Arsenal on Easter Saturday 1981, but the official attendance was nearly 31,000 that day, even though official capacity was 34,600.

That was in the early 60s the ground was closed in a fairly arbitrary fashion. I think the official capacity was around 28,000.

Oh, ok - a little before my time. I see that official capacity reached 31,000 in 1961 & while we didn't quite hit it, we came a bit close a few times in the Championship season & no wonder they might have shut the terrace gates in those days which was, as you say, rather random.

The record crowd stood at 28194 from 1939 until it was broken against Spurs in 1961 with 28778 in there.Broken again at Easter 1962 against Arsenal with 30649.
