Lots of things happened yesterday that I've not noticed posted here, though I may have missed them of course. Young Derry footballer Ryan McBride's coffin was carried to the family home, following his untimely death on Sunday. There was a plane crash in Sudan. Amazingly people survived, despite initial reports stating that all aboard had died. Apparently a freight train derailed in Somerset...

Indeed, where a damaged Lithium battery could catch on fire and nothing can be done about it until it's too late. It's utterly dumb on so many levels

But the ban only applies to certain airlines. You can still take your iPad on a US airlines aircraft flying to the same destinations.

In fairness Jeera, this thread is about perceived preventative measures with regards to Islamic terror attacks. Both examples you give are tragic accidents whereas the example benters gives is a deliberate attempt to end life.

I meant he hadn't bothered himself to post on the topic. No comparison intended. And yes, tragic events in their own right.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/03/20/cctv-shows-moment-paris-airport-attac Sounds like he was pickled more than radicalised. Meanwhile in other news, based on the daily average of annual figures you would have expected 27 deaths on French roads since this attack took place. I look forward to your campaign for road safety or calls to ban vehicles.

Your final paragraph is pretty weak imo. You try to contextualise deliberate attempts at murder and terror by bringing in statistics on accidents.

I don't think it's strange to put things in context. I'm not making value judgements between the two. A life's a life (although there weren't any lives taken in the Paris attack, which doesn't sound like a planned terror attack in any case). [Post edited 21 Mar 2017 9:26]

Accidents happen. They can often be tragic and we can take steps to avoid accidents. But ultimately that is exactly what they are accidents. However, acts of murder and terror involve people making a decision to take lives. I can't see how the two can be compared.

I'm only making a comparison in terms of the scale of the impact, not motives. Although to say that all road deaths are accidents isn't the case at all as the number of drink, drug and recent high profile phone-related deaths show). But no those people, whilst criminally negligent don't set out to kill anyone, so of course I can see the difference. Anyway, It's a bit of a bugbear of mine that 1,700-1,800 people can be killed on our roads every year and it barely generates a ripple. And I'd say that's worth caring about (I know you're not saying that isn't the case). Yet the press and certain people are keen to jump on an overseas attack by a Muslim and ram fear down people's throats, when statistically the likelihood of being caught up in something like that is miniscule compared to other risks we face. It's similar with the 'collateral' military deaths. Thousands and we're completely desensitised to them. If we didn't put things in context, we'd all be quivering wrecks cowering under the barrage of hate in the Express, Main, Sun, etc.

Ban is likely to be slightly different from what we've been told. If the issue is bombs in laptops or iPads, whether the hold or hand luggage is fairly irrelevant. The plane is still coming down. Either ban them or don't. This right now doesn't actually help anyone, apart from introduce a new risk to damage and combustion of lithium batteries in the hold where a fire is more difficult to detect and control With only a mobile in the cabin (which is allowed under this plan), I could still detonate a bomb via bluetooth to a device in the hold. All rushed and not thought through [Post edited 21 Mar 2017 15:20]
