My damaged package: another reason to get rid of the Monarchy 16:54 - Mar 23 with 1766 viewsMullet

Got a late birthday present through the post earlier this week. Amazon package (Sorry Harry and other bibliofloggers) in a plastic bag from Liz's lettercarriers.

Sorry, your delivery is damaged it says on it. Not just damaged when I open up the plastic, but completely open. A book is missing but a DVD is still in there. I know a book is missing because there's a receipt in there saying there should be a book and the DVD there. There clearly isn't.

Regardless, I go on their website. Can't find a single button, link or clue for this. Ring them up. Can't through after 5pm, what with this being the 1980's clearly.

Get through today "Oh yeah, sorry, it is really difficult to find on our website I'd not bother. We don't really have a proper category for this as you got some of the stuff but not all of it. Just fill in a form from the local post office and send off all the packaging and we'll investigate". Great, so I have to wait until the weekend to queue up to get a form, and then they might look into it.

I'll probably get something back eventually. But didn't we overthrow communism to avoid this sort of nonsense? Surely I could email them photos and the amazon reference numbers, Amazon could get some employee they work to death and pay no tax or whatever to do so, to confirm this and they just sort it out within an hour or so?

Is it me? Or of all the first world problems there are, this should be simpler.

Contact Amazon, send them a picture of the packaging if they ask. Your contract is with Amazon, they will send a replacement. They may want the packaging back, it's their responsibility to deliver your goods safely. They will take it up with Royal Mail.

Hmmm, slightly bored phone lady suggested not as it happens. How interesting
Could be tonight's project then.

Short shrift from their Dublin office, as it was a present I can do nothing so it seems. Sender must make all claims or something.

I hadn't twigged the present bit. Ask the person who bought it to get in touch with Amazon, the contract is with them. The goods were ordered as a gift to be delivered to you, you haven't got the complete order. Amazon have to replace them, they do not have a leg to stand on. I'm not a fan of Amazon's customer service but tell the purchaser to be persistent.

Wish Amazon would deliver by Royal Mail to me - I know roughly what time it'll arrive, the postie knows where to leave parcels if out, never had anything go missing in 2 years at this addy.

Instead, their own couriers deliver at anytime 8am-7pm, don't leave stuff in safe place, leave parcels on doorstep to get lashed by rain for 8 hours (biscuits, imagine ..), or deliver to a house half a mile away cos they use satnav, tho I've told them not to ...

If you leave yourself alone for a little while, your damaged package will start to heal.

Certainly head to the doctors for the discharge though mate.

Glad to help....

I agree Ryorry.

Recently I had ordered an electric saw for son's brithday (he wanted one!). Two days later I got an email saying it would be delivered that day.

Sod's law it was a Saturday and we were going to Ipswich. Tried the tracker bit which said it had left the depot. My instructions to amazon are always to leave in porch if no answer to doorbell.

Got home from Ipswich, no parcel. No note in door saying where it was either. Tried near neighbours but nothing. Looked at tracker and it said parcel delivered at 1.32 and signed by Mrs Bluebell.

I eventually found a number to ring bearing in mind this was 9 in the evening. I was told someone would ring me. They did 2 minutes later and I had a long converation with someone who said he would get in touch with the depot delivering the parcel and I would recieve an email. Told the guy I definitely didn't sign for it and could I have a copy of the signature. I checked the tracker notes again and it no longer said 'signed by Mrs Bluebell'.

After several emails with them eventually suggesting it could be with a neighbour and me asking why a note wasn't stuck through the door, they said they would send a new saw.

Lunch time the next day a neighbour about 10 doors down brought the saw saying it had been delivered the day before.

The following day I got another saw which I then had the problem of returning!

Sorry to hear about that BB, what a saga - had similar with another company who left my parcel on doorstep of house a mile away - but owners were away on hol for 3 days! Luckily they knew me by name & called round with it when they returned.

I've lately started to think it would actually be easier and less time-consuming to go to shops in the old-fashioned way than do online shopping, although my nearest town & big stores are all 12+ miles away. Problem is I need a lot of specialist items which are only available from distance, although some shops in town will do their best to order for you if going down the bulk purchase route.

The problem with Amazon & a few other couriers is that they never have the same drivers on the same routes, so they never get to know their areas - hugely important in rural areas where there are no street names or numbers, just a scattered collection of houses with individual names. That's the complete opposite of DPD, best couriers by far - their drivers stick to same routes, so know the geography and all their regular customers. Must save shedloads of time, seems so obviously better a way to run things. And of course they have the morning email with the '1-hour slot' notification as well, which is brilliant.

Amazon delivered my last parcel on a SUNDAY. And had to wait till 4pm, and cancel stuff we were meant to be doing that day. They never leave it in a "safe place" (by the back gate down our passage) or with who you ask it be left with - and I don't want my dodgy neighbour taking it in.
