Self help books on 17:03 - Mar 24 by J2BLUE | In virtually every case of extreme obesity there is an underlying problem where food is used as an emotional crutch. Most people use one of drugs, alcohol or smoking but food is also an option. It's a hard habit to break. If you watch My 600 Life you will see a constant theme of people getting that big because they were abused, raped, beaten as a child, had a close family death, are hiding their true sexuality etc etc. It's very easy to say eat less move more and that is the obvious solution but some form of counseling would be better for most obese people IMO alongside the diet/exercise. |
we have all experienced times when things aren't going as well as they might i normally neck a couple of pints of manthefckup and crack on with life, because it won't last forever i fully appreciate the above is not for everyone, but it works for me

Self help books on 17:06 - Mar 24 by J2BLUE | I started this thread to ask for book ideas. There was no attention seeking there. I don't wish to go into my issues on here to be honest. I just wanted a few techniques for when i'm in a particular situation. Quite happy to let the thread die. Not waiting for people to say oh go on! |
get yourself to shoreditch for a night out, that should put a smile on your face !!!! it might cost you a few quid but it will be worth it

Best 'self help' books imo are not those identikit books that promise you a simple plan towards ultimate happiness, but just those books that feature inspiring stories or acts from people in subjects you're interested in. For me it's reading about regular guys or gals who've done nutty extreme activities, like taken up ultrarunning or cycled across Europe on a whim. Makes me get out on my bike or feet. A break from routine and habits is good too - harder to do though.

Fair enough. I honestly think you might need something to be passionate about and have some beauty in your life to appreciate. This forum, while entertaining and thought provoking at times , runs on a very low energy level. Feel free to PM me if you want.

i do wonder if some actually have a life outside of the this forum that could be part of your advice, spend less time talking to invisible "friends" and spend more time socialising with real ones

For anyone who wants this kind of thing there's a series of self-help materials online called 'moodjuice''. There are booklets for anxiety/stress/depression amongst others. Completely free. I'm a clinical psychologist working on the NHS and recommend these as all the self-help info that most people would need. Mindfulness also good as has been said.

Break your routine. Expose all your senses to positive things and positive people.

This place is an energy, time and positivity suck. But Phil and Gav have got to eat somehow, so look on it as care in the community...

Good idea, but there's no need if you're able to compartmentalise your time on here. "Don't let the bastards grind you down."

Yep, agree with both of those. I mentioned breaking routines and habits above, but easier said than done sometimes. I used to do big trips to weird and wonderful places overseas for work, often remote areas and/or developing countries. A life uncluttered, with lots of activity and surrounded by happy people is the best medicine I've ever had. If I was in charge of the NHS I'd prescribe treks in the Himalaya or somewhere similar as a cure for all manner of ails. Bit more expensive than generic drugs though.
