The real terror lies in the contrast between the 1st half, which is essentially the Cuban Missile Crisis, in Sheffield.... and the 2nd, which is bleak beyond words.

I watched it at the time - my wife was most disturbed by it and still recounts how much she hated it whenever anything about nuclear war is mentioned!
It was, of course, a much lower budget interpretation of nuclear holocaust that followed on from the glitzy American production "The Day After".
To younger people who wonder what it must have been like watching Threads with the Cold War in full swing : most of us never thought for one minute that any nation would be stupid enough to use nuclear weapons against another state with nuclear capability, so a lot of the 'fear' was (as today) hyped up by the press / media. I viewed the show as grim fiction : no more, no less. |  | | |
