This is a bit of an eye-opener. Paedophilia in pop. on 18:49 - Mar 27 by sparks | People seem to forget that Bill Wyman was with his subsequent wife, Mandy Smith, when she was 13. A better example of the different attitudes then is hard to find. It was all over the front pages, but I don't recall him doing time or being hounded by baying mobs. |
I know, I mentioned it earlier in this thread, along with Elvis. Chuck Berry etc etc Paedophilia ain't what it used to be

I think Ray Davies kill that Sunday afternoon there's something special It's just like another world. Jogging in the park is my excuse To look at all the little girls. I'm not a flasher in a rain coat, I'm not a dirty old man, I'm not gonna snatch you from your mother, I'm an art lover. Come to daddy, Ah, come to daddy, Come to daddy. Pretty little legs, I want to draw them, Like a Degas ballerina. Pure white skin, like porcelain, She's a work of art and I should know I'm an art lover. Come to daddy, And I'll give you some spangles. Little girl don't notice me Watching as she innocently plays. She can't see me staring at her Because I'm always wearing shades. She feeds the ducks, looks at the flowers. I follow her around for hours and hours.

That avoids stating the girl's age. Young Girl makes it clear that the girl is underage.

Paedophilia in pop. on 21:05 - Mar 27 with 1701 views | jeera | Dunno about paedophilia exactly, but loads of Motown stuff was, "Young girl" this, and "little girl" that. I suppose you could say that was just affectionate terminology of the time...? Although it does feel a bit uncomfortable hearing it, and did even years ago.

I don't read too much into it personally. To those that are really creeped out by these lyrics, I'd recommend the excellent novel 'Lolita'.

Don't get me wrong. Let's not pretend teenage girls weren't/aren't sexually active. Plenty were/ maybe are, but these songs were generally being sung by men who appeared to be in their 40s. Which gave us young lads unwanted competition for a start.

On that note, I've not seen the original film, but thought Jeremy Irons rather brave to take on the part for the remake.

It's rightly considered one of the novels of the century. If it was written by a British man now he would get strung up and shot. Literature is supposed to push boundaries.

This is a bit of an eye-opener. Paedophilia in pop. on 22:28 - Mar 27 with 1478 views | BelvedereBrunswick | I can't listen We Don't Talk Anymore by Cliff Richard without alarm bells ringing: Used to think that life was sweet. Used to think we were so complete. I can't believe you'd throw it away. Used to feel we had it made. Used to feel we could sail away. Can you imagine how I feel today. Well it seems a long time ago you were the lonely one. Now it comes to letting go you are the only one. Do you know what you've done. It's so funny how we don't talk anymore. It's so funny why we don't talk anymore. But I ain't losing sleep and I ain't counting sheep. it's so funny how we don't talk anymore. Well it really doesn't matter to me. I guess you're leaving was meant to be. It's down to you now you want to be free. Well I hope you know which way to go you're on your own again. And don't come crying to me when you're the lonely one. Remember what you've done. It's so funny how we don't talk anymore. It's so funny why we don't talk anymore But I ain't losing sleep and I ain't counting sheep. It's so funny how we don't talk anymore. But I ain't losing sleep and I ain't counting sheep. As a soulie I'm rather pedantic about the term Motown. It was a record label not a genre of music. The Drifters weren't Motown either. Motown has a very distinctive sound as all the backing tracks were played by the house band the Funk Brothers. I've never found the lyrics of Motown groups risqué. [Post edited 28 Mar 2017 7:29]
