Not a suggestion for the new manager, but I was wondering why he left Town as a player in 1985. Going to Sunderland wasn't exactly a step up and he wasn't at the end of his career aged 29.

Maybe but it would have only have briefly denied the inevitable, I've always loved Eric Gates as he was 1st Town player I saw score in the flesh 1-1 against Newcastle, Beardsley gave them the lead with a sweet free kick. |  | | |

We were offloading wages due to the stands being built weren't we?
We were insane to not only sell all of our top players... and get rid off the grafters, just look at the 81 squad... Beattie's career finished in 82, Mills and Hunter also gone in 82, Burley, Gates and Osmanin 85, Butcher in 86, Cooper in 87 no wonder we were relegated and couldn't get promoted again until 1992.
Imagine if we had kept hold of these with the likes of Forrest, Yallop, Stockwell, Dozzell, Kiwomya, Milton, Zondervan, Thompson, Palmer, Linighan and Johnson and a returning Warky who proved class was permanent, we would have unlikely to have gone down at all despite their age and needn't have signed some of the rubbish we had on the books. |  |

The building of the stands caused the demise of a great team/club, visions of the future, but at what a cost.
Burley as Manager got us promotion and a great first year back in The Premiership, but with an aging team. Having to compete in The Premiership and also Europe the following year, money was spent on underachieving players and the rest is history. |  | | |
