burritogate..... on 17:08 - Mar 29 by monytowbray | Ditto. There's very little specialist places in Ipswich, which is the big independent "in" thing at present. You know, those places that only specialise in one thing, but nail it hard. |
I refer you to my earlier list. There's plenty.

burritogate..... on 17:09 - Mar 29 by AdmiralFunge | Enough reasonable Indian places, 2/3 boss ones. Bekash is tiptop. Mizu is perennially ace. Aqua pretty good, if dear. Rios always excellent. Casablanca/ Ottoman/ Meze (sp) all top Med/ North African joints. Ottoman in particular is the best kebab I've had outside North London. Waterfront/ Last Anchor pretentious, but tasty food. Cult run by the Brewery Tap lot, but better. Sweet P doing his thing (his jerk seasoning needs more spice, but whatever). Selkirk turning out unreal Nepalese cuisine. There's a bunch wrong with this town; places to eat, however, ain't the problem... (I feel your suggestions too, btw - Museum St is just brilliant...) |
I'm off for a curry in the 'Worth after the game this weekend. Now that is a hidden gem of a curry house in Suffolk. Do think sometimes people need to look, or be reasonable with their expectations. We live in Tory Britain, people don't have the money to support massive amounts and varieties of eating places. Even my local market town which is very monied indeed has places opening and closing all the time some are of a very high standard/established over 25 years and they still struggle. I remember going out in Tonbridge (don't ask) and it was just a procession of chains even ten years ago. I think that's the norm in most British towns without a decent tourist trade and always will be.

Honestly, I'm yet to eat anywhere in Ipswich I'd run back to in a hurry to go again, a few on that list included. Smokey Joes was the only one, until ownership changed and ruined it.

I've lived in a city with such options and worked in one too (N*rwich). When you look at what Ipswich has vs other twons it just feels like it's 10 years behind food trends.

It sounds like your tastes are more cosmopolitan than where you live, which is funny as i'd be happy in a village with one pub - too much choice can be a pain in the arse.

I like options depending on my mood. Although since going back to the vegan life I'd settle with one specialist vegan place in all honesty.

I was forgetting you're a vegan - that can't be easy anywhere in fariness. We have one in the office - middle of London - and he reckons eating out can be tricky even here.

Not really. Why would it be on point with "trends" exactly? Look where it is. Plus there's nothing worse than going into Manchester and finding decent spots replaced with some photocopy of an idea from Shoreditch or somesuch hole because the owners are scared of staying relevant etc. You end up losing decent places too that way even in big cities. You should make your own anyways when it comes to food like burritos and stuff. The fun of eating out is getting stuff you can't make yourself, or it being nice enough you can have a big table of people happy enough to enjoy it with. I get that ding ding cuisine is never appealing, and only useful if convenient but there must be more to Ipswich than just that as others have said.

Trends? Man V Food stuff is big at the moment, gourmet burgers and that, BBQ style, etc. Pie shops making a bit of a comeback.

All stuff that's been and faded in the last decade though. You have to consider as well the demographic for that stuff, there's probably not the population in Ipswich to support the opening, let alone maintaining people sinking tens of thousands into somewhere. I think you're being a bit pie in the sky here.

If Smokey Joe's was the benchmark then it ain't a high bar to reach. All of the places I listed are head and shoulders above that place, and if burgers are your thing the love thy burger murders smokey Joe's everyday of the week I agree with Callis on the nightlife/music scene front though, it's tragic, but food wise there are some gems about, maybe not on the city level but for a small town there is plenty of choice.

There used to be a Vegan Cafe in Ipswich, Cafe Marnos, it was where the Kwan Thai is now. Why they closed it down I don't know, probably because the commercial rents in that street are pretty high and as they didn't open in the evenings they probably didn't make enough money to cover it.

For Ipswich I rated it. LTB was okay when I tried it, but didn't think it was up with there with Meat Mission for quality. My dream is to open Ipswich's double first - An exclusive vegan-only burrito restaurant. I have a rough business plan but f*ck knows where to start. Also fear I'd never match my current salary with it.

A good friend is vegan and I know that's his main gripe with Ippy is the lack of options on that front, I know museum St does some but he said they never really change the menu. Years ago there was a place called marnos which was top notch. There's definitely a gap in the market, go for it.

Tell your mate Zizzi and Ask Italian now do a separate vegan menu with all 3 courses covered. Pizza with mock cheese too. :)

Will do cheers, we were planning a night out soon and it's always difficult to find somewhere that caters for him, if Ask offers that then it's a win all round.

Marnos was around from the early seventies at least, I ate in there once around 1982. No memory of the food but the folk music (poverty, poverty, knock!) killed the ambience for me. Didn't like the crowd in there when I was a teenager and preferred the cafe at the corner of Tacket Street and Upper Brook Street for making a coffee last a couple of hours.

Hipster is essentially a term used to take the piss. However on a few occasions I have seen it worn by people as a badge of honour. Bewildering. [Post edited 29 Mar 2017 20:57]

The lack of a common vowel is a further reason of why ipswich is sh1t I thought we were naming strange reasons for ipswichs sh1tness?
