Winning a friendly isn't the issue, the complete lack of football we attempted in them set us up perfectly for the season.
You see preparation is key, and if the prep work is sht the final outcome is sht. For proof of this see the woodwork I painted in first house. Same rules apply to sport.

You don't have to go so early though, use the rail card and split the tickets at Manningtree and you can get a later train for broadly the same price. I checked on National Rail.
