Le Pen steps down as leader of right wing nut bags 20:47 - Apr 24 with 1567 viewsSarge

Presumably because the National Front has too much baggage to be elected so she'll run as an independent and then rejoin if she were to win?

Nah, she's only stepped down as leader, not left the party altogether.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

She knows she has no chance of winning as many people won't vote for a Le Pen regardless of which one.

She is hoping they might vote for someone else though and the party can get more than they would under her.

Won't work in the long run but probably the best strategy they had.

Doesn't work like that, she's standing for President as an individual, not by virtue of heading a party. They can't just swap candidates like that, mid election.

Fair enough.

But why would that help her chances?

I'm not sure it does, or only indirectly. My reading of what was said is that she's temporarily stepping aside from the party leadership (presumably admin and organisation, not to mention holding the thing together and in line) to concentrate on campaigning to become President.

Macron's "party" is more like a campaign machine, well suited to his drive for office.
