Have you noticed that they nearly always fall into these two categories...

1) Kind, well mannered, foreign men who hold down intelligent conversation.

2) Aggressive, bitter, bald, English men over the age of 40 that usually insist on making racist comments. Often wearing a checkered shirt and overweight.

You might have switched the audio off, but he is still glowering at you through the glass trying to decide if you are the one he is going to drug, rape and dump in a ditch today.

To be honest I'm basing this on my own experiences of using taxi services in this country.

I use Taxis quite a bit, most of the foreign drivers I've had are very polite even though I imagine the poor sods get lots of abuse (I know some do, they've told me).

That said I haven't had such a bad experience with English drivers either, you get the odd grumpy sometimes racist a**ehole but they mostly seem polite enough.

I have one regular chap who handles all my taxi-based needs. He's a hugely affable chap who's main failing is that he supports Arsenal.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

I haven't had an English cab driver for years, but then I never get black cabs.

Doesn't describe my mate Danny who drives a black cab. White English (but has a family connection to Northern Ireland), difficult to tell if he is balding or if he just keeps his hair very close cropped, Not overweight. Softly spoken (often too quiet for someone with hearing difficulties). Well mannered. Bitter only about the way his mum has been treated by various authorities. I think he is over 40. Somewhat libertarian in his viewpoint but with a strong streak of social justice in amongst it. Did have an argument with Richard Curtis (Love Actually) who stormed off at the end of the ride. Appears to be Noel Gallagher's cabbie of choice (very quiet, Mr. Gallagher). Once gave me a lift from Strand to Hertfordshire (no charge) so we could carry on a talk on politics, very detailed and well constructed arguments. Doubt if he would know how to make a racist comment but he would pull someone up very quickly for making one.

Your number 2 example perfectly embodies the Dad of someone we know. Bar the customary Slazenger joggers.

Please note: prior to hitting the post button, I've double checked for anything that could be construed as "Anti Semitic" and to the best of my knowledge it isn't. Anything deemed to be of a Xenophobic nature is therefore purely accidental or down to your own misconstruing.

I, too, have experienced the pain of trying to get a cab off the rank in Sudbury on a Saturday night.

To be fair I can agree with your first point. The driver I got over the weekend was a thoroughly knowledgeable guy and was discussing Islamic military Generals and campaigns against the Byzantines after I mentioned my Masters subject.

I find it's a split you can get the very polite ones who strike up conversation about things in life in general ,
Then you get the ones who only speak broken English and have no idea what deodorant is but I find these cab drivers drive for a certain cab company which I refuse to use unless I am totally desperate.
Hawk express are the best drivers well dressed and mannered at all times.
