Part of what is wrong with today's world. Full of self gratifying, back slapping pricktards who spend their days writing absolute prize winning waffle to justify their bullshat existence. Recruitment consultants discussing hot air and marketing firms relaying long drawn-out and superfluous 'insight' to confirm to the world they really are experts in hot steaming cow sh#t.

Do I really have to play this game to on? Life was better before all this crap.

Rant over.

I think it's useful in the early stages of a fledgling career, when you're first trying to build a network. Later down the line, ideally, you're in a position where you don't need LinkedIn whatsoever.

Had the 'pleasure' of meeting some of their senior team recently. They have given me an 'executive playbook' that gives me '12 steps to becoming a social leader'.

None of the contents will surprise you......

But I wouldn't worry....the whole thing will disappear up its own behind now that Microsoft are at the controls.

I imagine it can feel like everyone else is gloating to make you feel bad. Particularly for you when you're in your 50s and all your old school friends have "MD at..." of "Head of..." as their job title and yours still says "Burger King cashier".

I really don't like LinkedIn. I work in corporate but I no way enjoy having to use tools like this for getting jobs.

I've striped my profile right back, just list my education, career job titles etc. When younger it used to be a mirror of my CV but I would get hounded by recruitment numpties who would use key word searches for matches. Now not so many.

If you're starting out and want a career in corporate then it's an evil necessity to a point. It's just another social media platform where they will info gather on you.

I still get Portsmouth job offers despite the fact my profile says I've been in EA jobs for nearly two years.

Also hate the recruiters who just add you with no context or message.

I've also been head hunted by recruiters who have no relationship with the business whom are offering the job, just chancing it by finding the job listed online and getting a list of applicants together to send said business as a sales pitch. Pr1cks.

It unbelieably annoying isn't it? They just key word match, send out a pre scripted email and hope for the best. The ones i do reply to are the ones that have clearly made an effort and are not just going for the 'winning by numbers' approach.

I've a couple of really good mates who are recruiters and they are nice guys. How the hell they ended up being in such a rubbish industry i will never know. I know the money can be good but it wouldnt be enough to tempt me to lower myself that far.

i had one once recruiting an in house role for a large UK hotel chain recruiter in my specialism. It started with "As I am sure you already know, the (removed business name) site is developing its capability tremendously.". My initial thought was "Why the f*ck would I already know (or care about) this?"

It's a goldmine for recruiters and they ravage it. It only takes one bad day at work or one horror meeting for people to question their jobs, if a recruiter times it well they might catch 1 in 50 people on a bad day and get a whopping fee out of it for basically no work.

....makes me laugh. I get endless requests to add some random unknown gadgie to my list of contacts who are all......................Recruitment consultants/experts/managers or whatever other over inflated title they want to call themselves. We all know its mud at the wall tactics and whether there's any worthwhile jobs out there to jump ship its anyone's guess. I know how to put a stop to it- as I assume you can put your age on there somewhere... and if they clock that, I guess I'll never hear from anyone again.

Tend to agree with the author of this thread.. Is there any point to this or is it just another Facebook?

Had a job through LinkedIn.

As long as you keep the network to people you actually know (just like any social network) and not accept every recruitment agent, it's fine.

I rarely go on it though. I tend to just avoid things that are annoying me.

It's a double edged sword. For companies with a stronger brand (and LinkedIn presence to quote a poster below) it offers a chance to cut out recruiters by doing more inhouse.

At the current rate of progress my company is going to save c.£200k in recruitment fees from direct recruitment via LinkedIn this year. No wonder companies are mandating 'presence' as it is basically leveraging their staff profiles as a free resource.

I'm a fully qualified mortgage advisor with several years in the industry. I get offered an "opportunity" or someone begs to speak on the phone to me about a viable position twice a week. Inevatibly I keep these people close just in case redundancy ever hits, but bat away every offer with a polite email that I have virtually set as a template.

I've had a couple of tentative enquiries through LinkedIn and one serious one, but when they called me it turned out that they wanted someone much more junior.

The bit that really annoys me is the repeated attempts by salesmen to sell me stuff that I don't need (usually expensive software that duplicates what I do in Excel). One guy has contacted me at least three or four times, always starting his messages along the lines of 'I am excited to be working with this new company'.
