But surely they [the FA] need to accept there is a huge clash between their rules and the culture that surrounds the modern game, where anyone who watches follows football on TV or in the stadia is bombarded by marketing, advertising and sponsorship by betting companies, and where much of the coverage now, on Sky for example, is intertwined with the broadcasters’ own gambling interests.

There is also this, sport in this country is risking the creation of huge problems with gambling.

According to his statement, he only bet against his team when he was not in the team / on the bench.

And he does have a point about the general relationship between football and the betting companies.
The laws around betting mean that even match-day staff (stewards, dj etc) aren't allowed to bet on football, yet the betting companies can do what they like.

I actually think it is pretty wrong the extent to which gambling is rammed down people's throats if you watch any football these days.

Agreed.

Whilst he should be punished for what he's done, although not as severely as he has been, I do hope the FA take on board his comments re how gambling is rammed down the throats of people watching any sport.

I would say he is spot on with Gambling culture being rammed down the throats of anyone related to football. I've seen or heard Ray Winstone on Sky Sports more than most players in the PL over the last few years, for example.

But at least when he's too young to bet, as Rommers was, having family members do it for you (someone older &, you'd think, more sensible) it would be under control.

Technically he hasn't bet against his team in a match he played in, but in effect he has.

A "lay" on Samaras scoring (a game in which he played) is technically listed as a bet for his team as opposed to a bet against his team. But a "lay" is clearly the opposite of a "bet" so he has in effect bet against his team in a match he played.

The punishment fully fits the crime.

100% agree. The FA's draconian stance on players betting, especially on games in which they or their team has no involvement, sits very uneasily with the plethora of gaming companies as shirt sponsors, "official betting partners" & the constant bombardment of betting advertisements when football is on TV. The clueless duffers are quite happy for football to get into bed with the betting industry, but expect footballers to be whiter-than-white.
Yes, players should NOT be allowed to bet on games in which their team is playing.

Player A plays for Man UTD.
Player B, a good mate of Player A, plays for Newcastle.
Player A places a bet on a Newcastle player to get sent off against Ipswich.
Player A gets in touch with Player B, and offers to split the winnings of the bet.
Player B thinks, "sod it, why not?", and gets sent off.

It can never be as simple as restricting it to games in which your team is playing.
