None of them had a squad number though?

I don't think he ever wore 5. 3 and 6 certainly.

Got to admit I was guessing. If only someone could tell us who has ever worn the number 5 shirt then we could make a proper decision.

It would depend if they were to wear that before it was a number or before football was invented, or something, surely?

Correct, the great man made his debut at left back but almost all of his 296 starts were in number 6 shirt.

I think that there could be a case for John Wark being the best ITFC player ever to wear the number 5 shirt but the best of John Wark was when he was NOT wearing number 5. Allan Hunter would be the correct answer to the best number 5 in my view but as those strange threads only deal in squad numbers he(and Warky) do not qualify.
Does anyone know on 12:30 - May 10 with 2085 views | Meadowlark | Allan Hunter Russel Osman Bill Baxter Andy Nelson. Captain when we won the league! Big Al was an immense player. Unbeatable. Kevin Beatties's partner in the centre of defence. Definitely my top number 5. Russel Osman. Partnered Terry Butcher in the twin centre back roles. Excellent player. Bill Baxter was skipper when I first started watching Town and for a little fella he had a big heart. Captain of the 1967 Div 2 winning team. Famously fell out with Mr Robson. Andy Nelson. Captain when we won the league!

Yes but in Robson's time not only were was the idea of squad numbers unknown, but so was the concept of a squad - certainly in Town's case anyhow.

So it is the squad numbers and not the order they emerge from the tunnel then?

Does anyone know on 15:48 - May 10 with 2009 views | sundaze | It depends if you need to have the number on the shirt and the shorts. It also needs the correct spellliing, anyone with too many letters in their name shouldn't count.

Largely because at that time there was only one substitute in domestic football. Basically most clubs were just first team plus reserves although clubs like Liverpool had better reserves than we did.
