Possibly. Never let a crisis go to waste and all that. MER is right though, it's not the government's decision to raise the level.

I would still love someone to explain something about this to me. How do you think that arming police on the streets or putting armed forces on the streets is going to stop what happened last night? The only creditable way to stop these terrorists is to use the intelligence forces to stop them at source, by the time they are on the street with the bomb it is too late, even if they were confronted by armed police/troops do you not think they would just detonate the bomb? How are armed troops or police supposed to know what a terrorist with an IED strapped to him looks like? They don't walk around with a sign saying "I'm carrying a bomb"

I am not suggesting it would have done, talk about reading between the lines. I just think it's time for them to be armed. Our police are well trained, the UK don't have idiots running around with guns like over here but as a security analyst said last night the threat of Islamic terrorism against the UK is 10 times the what is faced in the US. I do think it is a sensible idea to do so, rather than rely on armed response units. It will help the public feel safe and could well stop a lone wolf nutcase one day. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

How is gun crime in The US now? I reckon we should bring back the death penalty for suicide bombers.

That is nonsense. In fact it might make folk even less safe. Perhaps you should ask why the police don't want to be armed, and have repeatedly expressed the wish NOT to be. Why not look it up and have a read.

Armed response is pretty rapid these days, a guy I went to school with flipped out and was shot dead within minutes. This is in a relatively unremarkable town miles from anywhere remarkable.

It will change nothing except scare and control law abiding citizens. Every person with the slightest link to terrorism should be arrested, questioned, profiled and prove their innocence. Sounds like Internment I guess, but drastic measures have to be taken. Nothing says " we will not bow to terrorism" like 3 inches of bullet proof glass!

Sounds like giving terrorists exactly what they want - and not only that doing most of the work for them. I'm not saying that terrorism shouldn't be fought and suspects investigated but let's put it into perspective. We'd save far more lives by throwing the book at dangerous drivers. Or spending that budget on the NHS. [Post edited 24 May 2017 7:09]
