Abba.
A shocking decision. Made some of the most iconic pop songs of the last 40 or so years.
I'd say The KLF take the title, made a couple of decent singles, burnt a million golden nuggets, gave little to no credit to the artists who did the vocals , that Doctor Who inspired effort under another guise and were/are the most pretentious and condescending purveyors of pop music there has ever been.

Don't diss the Captain, seriously. He was ***king visionary, a true artist. Trout Mask Replica is work of ***king genius. Plenty of decent stuff after that too.
Then he knocked the music on the head in the early 80's and became an abstract painter instead.
UK wise I'd say Oasis, although Stone Roses was a good shout. US based there's plenty to choose from but I'll say Pearl Jam. Bloody awful.
On another note a few people have mentioned covers, if you've never seen it you need to YouTube Take That covering Smells Like Teen Spirit. It had to be seen to be believed.

Nobody in the crowd seemed to dislike it.

Pearl Jam are fooking excellent. Vs is one of the best albums of its generation. You're wrong.
Kasabian are the obvious choice - sh1t riffs, and a bloke dressed like Vince Noir Royal Blood are the first recent flash in the pan types that come to mind. Coldplay - nursery rhymes for idiots. Inspiral Carpets deserve a mention too.
