Gardening advice: what do I plant 08:25 - May 28 with 5810 viewsgordon

Just cleared a border next to a tall wall in the garden. Faces West. Gets decent sunshine till midday. Soil looks a bit ropey, but I'm not a soil expert. Have compost and prepared to use it. Also got canes. I'd quite like something that grows quickly, climbs, flowers, is good for the bees, and produces something edible. Answers before 10 please when I will go to the Garden Centre. Best answer will be planted.

And the edible part?

Crumbs you dont want much do you !

If the soil is crap dig it over and add some soil improver if you can.

How long is the border?

This.

Soil improver now. Then bastard trench it with horse manure in October, finally plant in April before mulching the whole length with mushroom compost.

No point doing anything until you improve that soil

I agree with Brogans Nose re the honeysuckle, and you can suck the base of the petals to get the nectar out!

Nasturtiums are quick growers and climbers, like well drained soil & sun. You can put the leaves in salads, they're peppery and said to contain a natural antibiotic.

You could put in a few globe artichokes too, tho I've no experience of growing those & they may only be available from specialists online.

You could also put a few of the more decorative cabbages at the front, some are quite colourful.

Sorry, only just seen the time deadline!

Well done everyone, excellent advice (I hope). I went with Chives, Runner Beans, Clemantis, Buddleia and Foxglove. Also found a bit of lavender and (I think) Sage to go in there. If any of it dies I'll get in touch with the relevant TWTD'er to claim my refund.
