Today marks the 70th anniversary of Town's first ever professional football match. On Saturday, August 29th 1936 the Blues defeated Tunbridge Wells Rangers 4-1 at Portman Road in the Southern League.

Jackie Williams, Bobby Bruce, Jack Blackwell and George Dobson scored the Town goals in front of 14,211 supporters.

The Blues won the Southern League by five points that season, winning 19 games, drawing eight and losing three. However, they failed to win election to the Football League, receiving only 20 votes from the League clubs' chairmen, and Exeter and Aldershot were re-elected with 40 and 34 votes respectively.
