Jim: Agents Have a Role
Jim: Agents Have a Role

Boss Jim Magilton says that agents will always be in football despite being an interested watcher of last night's Panorama investigation into transfer corruption.

Magilton told the club site: "I saw the programme and watched with interest.

"Agents aren't the most popular people in football, and I can understand that, but I think they will always have a role to play in the game.

"Meeting a manager and chairman of a club to discuss a move can be an intimidating situation if you are a young lad of 20 say, and the player may need a representative then.

"The trick is to make sure that you pick the right person to represent you and like in any business, there are good people and not so good people."

Magilton used the PFA to negotiate his financial affairs during his playing days - as have the likes of Tommy Miller and Matt Holland at times during their careers - and backs the the players' union taking this role: "Some people might argue there is a conflict of interest with the PFA involved but I don't see it that way.

"If there are good lines of communication then I don't see a problem and I think the PFA do a good job in representing players.

"They know the wage structures for clubs and what is the best deal they can get for a player at that club."
