Burnley 2-2 Town
Burnley 2-2 Town

Town picked up their second away point of the season after a 2-2 draw at Burnley. The Blues were two up through Sylvain Legwinski and Alan Lee inside eight minutes, but Burnley hit back with a goal in each half, while Town were denied a penalty and had a late goal harshly disallowed.

Jim Magilton had promised changes and into the side came Sylvain Legwinski for Gary Roberts, Billy Clarke for Pablo Couñago and David Wright for Chris Casement, the former Wigan man having recovered from his infected blister on his heel.

As predicted, Magilton switched his side to the 4-3-3/4-5-1 formation previously used at Plymouth with Clarke wide on the left, Walters on the right and with Owen Garvan sitting behind Legwinski and Tommy Miller in the centre of the midfield.

Town started brightly, as they did at Hull on Saturday, and in the fourth minute a fine move down the right started by Walters ended with Garvan teeing up Clarke on the left of the area, but the Irish U21 international, making his first start of the season, shot wide.

Three minutes later, Town went in front. Garvan whipped in a corner from the right to the near post and Legwinski flicked a header beyond Burnley keeper Gabor Kiraly for his first goal of the season, but one similar to most of those he scored last season.

While the Blues support were still celebrating, Town scored again. Lee and Clarke exchanged passes on the right, the youngster taking the ball on down the wing. Ex-Burnley man Lee made his way towards the far post from where he headed Clarke's deep cross over Kiraly, under the bar and into the corner of the net for his fifth goal of the season.

Burnley pulled a goal back within a minute in bizarre circumstances. Wade Elliott crossed from the right and Kyle Lafferty shoved David Wright out of his way before heading the ball into the net. Referee Colin Webster initially appeared to indicate that he had disallowed the goal for the push but, with Neil Alexander preparing to take the freekick, signalled for a goal, much to the consternation of the Town players and fans.

After the somewhat breathless start to the game, largely dominated by the Blues, there were few chances until the final 15 minutes of the first half. Burnley came more into the game and Alan Lee and Jon Walters temporarily switched positions.

On 32 another Garvan corner almost led to a goal but Jason De Vos's header was tipped over by Kiraly. From the second corner, Legwinski headed over.

Tommy Miller again came close to opening his account for the season in the 37th minute when a loose ball ricocheted into his path inside the area, however, Kiraly was out quickly to block.

Legwinski's audacious 30-yard dipper went narrowly wide, then a superb Garvan ball sent Clarke away on the left, but the striker slipped and lost his footing as he prepared to shoot.

Town were deservedly in front at the break, having for once got their reward for a dominant start. The Burnley goal came against the run of play and was harsh on Town, even ignoring what looked like a late change of heart by referee Webster. After the goal Burnley had run the game for 10 or 15 minutes but the Blues were back on top before the end.

Jon Walters joined the Town subs for their half-time warm-up, presumably to keep a niggle warm and was checked over by physio Matt Byard prior to the restart.

The former Chester man was to hit the first shot of the second half after breaking away on the right, but struck a weak effort across Kiraly's goal.

Miller shot straight at Kiraly from the edge of the box, then Stephen Jordan picked up the game's first yellow card for a succession of fouls.

Just before the hour mark, the Clarets got back on terms. Billy Clarke misdirected a pass on halfway and former Town loanee Alan Mahon played a through ball for Andy Gray to chase. Neil Alexander beat Gray to the ball but cannoned his clearance off the ex-Sheffield United striker, up into the air and under the crossbar. It was a goal as strange as they come and at that point at odds with the balance of play at that stage.

Robbie Blake saw a shot deflect through to Alexander, then Town felt they ought to have been awarded a penalty when Walters appeared to be tripped in the area by Jordan, but referee Webster wasn't interested.

Lafferty's shot from the 18-yard line was deflected wide off his own player when looking destined for the net, prior to Wade Elliott shooting wide after beating Dan Harding to a loose ball.

Alexander made a find save from a Gray header at the far post in the 68th minute as Burnley continued to have the better of the game, before Pablo Couñago replaced the tiring Billy Clarke, Town switching to 4-4-2 with Jon Walters moving to the left and Tommy Miller to the right.

On 75 Couñago played in Garvan, but despite the Irishman taking the ball round Kiraly, the keeper managed to get enough on the ball to take the pace off it and allow his defenders to clear.

Blake shot wide, then Alexander superbly pawed away Lafferty's shot from the left. Shortly afterwards, the Northern Irish international striker shot over.

Town thought they had won the game in the 83rd minute. Walters played a one-two with Couñago on the edge of the area and was through one-on-one with Kiraly and, just as it appeared he was going to slip the ball past the keeper, played it across the box to the onrushing Spaniard who stabbed home.

It looked like Couñago had run in from behind the ball, but the linesman decided otherwise and ruled the goal out for a controversial offside. Owen Garvan picked up his second yellow card of the season for his protests.

Neither side had another opportunity to win the game and Alan Mahon's yellow card for a foul on Couñago was the match's final action.

Town will be disappointed not to have claimed all three points having gone two up after eight minutes, but after a second half when Burnley were the better side for the most part, a draw was probably a fair result.

However, the Clarets will feel themselves lucky to have gained the point, having been on the better end of some strange refereeing, Colin Webster initially having ruled out Burnley's first goal, denying Town what seemed a decent shout for a penalty and then disallowing what appeared a good goal. The home side's second goal also owed much to good fortune.

All that said, the draw ends Town's run of three successive away defeats and on another day and with a bit better luck, the Blues would have been celebrating their first away victory since the trip to Luton at the end of March.

Town: Alexander, Wright, Harding, De Vos, Bruce, Garvan, Legwinski, Miller, Walters, Clarke (Couñago 70), Lee. Unused: Wilnis, Supple, Haynes, Casement. Att: 9,952.
