Bowden: No Cash For Fees
Bowden: No Cash For Fees

Chief executive Derek Bowden says he doubts manager Jim Magilton will have any cash to spend on fees during the January transfer window. However, this doesn't completely rule out new additions the squad.

Bowden told TWTD: “I doubt that we'll be spending money on fees in January. But we could do a bit of trading. And in between there's money for the loan market.”

The Town chief executive says manager Jim Magilton prefers to avoid paying fees for players if he can avoid doing so, with three Bosman free transfers the only signings over the summer: “We took the view that we had a transfer fee budget and we had a player wage budget and we — the club and the manager — decided we would prefer to spend the money on wages for the players we brought in, rather than blowing some of it on a half-million fee for somebody.

“It was a tactical decision if you like. We could have done either really. We could have brought in a player for a fee or maybe two and paid smaller fees, or alternatively brought in the three that we did and kept the current players. It's about using money on wages rather than fees and that's the plan that Jim is happy with.”

Bowden was speaking to TWTD in an interview featured in the new issue of the fanzine in which he also talks about the ongoing search for investment, the Darren Bent windfall, this year's accounts, the future of E.on's sponsorship, safe standing, Town's home attendances and more.

TWTD 89 goes on sale around the ground (from our sellers by Sir Alf, next to Planet Blue, by the Portman Road entrance to the Greene King Stand and at the North Stand end of Alderman Road) prior to Saturday's Wolves game, but is also available by post here either via a six-issue subscription or by purchasing a single copy.
