Town Fans Praised Again

Town's fans have been praised again with Premier League chief Richard Scudamore using the Portman Road atmosphere as an example of one Premiership ground that hasn't become more like a library.

Scudamore was talking on Nicky Campbell's Five Live programme on Friday and was refuting the claim that Premiership grounds lack atmosphere these days: "I have always found the atmosphere generated by the crowd at Ipswich to have added to my enjoyment of the high standard of football being played at Portman Road this season. The fans are a credit to their football club and the tremendous success Ipswich have enjoyed on their return to the Premier League. Both on and off the field the club has made many friends."

Old Trafford, Highbury and Villa Park have been amongst the quieter grounds visited by Town fans this year, but it seems Portman Road at least retains the kind of formidable atmosphere of the pre-seating days. Previously Alex Ferguson and others have praised Town while a report earlier in the season measured the noise made at Portman Road and deemed it the loudest ground in the Premiership.

Meanwhile Paolo Di Canio has praised those on the pitch, even comparing them to Real Madrid. The West Ham striker said: "In modern football you have to play like Ipswich, eleven players as a team. I'd never heard their names before, only Jim Magilton who I played with at Sheffield Wednesday, and he never played regularly there. However, he is now a top level player, one of the best orchestrators, and why? Because they play eleven all together - they make so much movement and they play as a unit. That was the difference between them and us, they were Real Madrid and we were a bad, bad team."

Not such a bad old stick is he? Still wasn't a penalty though.
