Garvan Hoping for First Cap
Garvan Hoping for First Cap
Wednesday, 28th May 2008 09:06

Midfielder Owen Garvan us hoping to win his first full Ireland cap on Thursday when the Republic take on Colombia at Craven Cottage (Sky Sports One, 8pm). The 20-year-old says he will decide on his Town future when he returns from international duty.

Garvan has been happy with how he has coped playing alongside Premier League stars so far: "I've enjoyed training with the senior lads, obviously you see them week-in and week-out on the telly and how good players they are and you just want to see how you get on against them.

"I think I've done OK against them, but obviously that's only training and the next step is how you do in the games and that's all I'm looking forward to now."

Garvan, whose uncle Mick Martin, a member of Giovanni Trapattoni's backroom staff, and his grandfather Con Martin both played international football for Ireland, is still to make a decision on his Town future: "I said I'd wait until after the Irish trip before we talk about it.

"They offered me a new two-year deal [until 2011] before the end of the season, but I just wanted to concentrate on making the play-offs and then obviously the Irish team."

The midfielder, whose current contract is up in the summer of 2009, has been linked with Middlesbrough, Everton and Wigan in recent months and admits he has ambitions to play in the top flight: "Since I got into the Ipswich team I wanted to play in the Premier League. It's always been high on my priorities and always will be."

Town defender Alex Bruce will hope to win his second cap against the South Americans, having joined Garvan on the bench when the Irish drew 1-1 with Serbia on Saturday.

Meanwhile, another Irish international, striker Alan Lee, will be at Town's stand at today's Suffolk Show where he will be signing merchandise from noon.
