Johnson: Williams Was Too Good an Opportunity

Bristol City boss Gary Johnson feels he's got a bit of a bargain by signing Gavin Williams from the Blues in a deal believed to be worth £100,000. Williams signed a two-year deal with the Robins earlier today.

Johnson, who was previously Williams's manager at Yeovil, says City fans will be immediately impressed with the midfielder: "I think our supporters will see why I've brought him here pretty soon.

"I believe Gavin will improve our squad. I know him very well and actually I never thought he would become available at the fee we've paid. The opportunity was too good to miss.

"The medical was important but people do have bad runs of luck and Gavin had three separate injuries which were all football-related.

"He had a knee injury, an ankle injury and a hernia. You get over those, they weren't career threatening.

"A fit Gavin Williams - mentally and physically - is a very, very good footballer."

Williams is delighted to be reunited with Johnson: "Obviously I know the manager from my time down at Yeovil. I know what he's about and it's good to be here.

"The move came about really quickly. The two clubs agreed a fee and as soon as I knew it was Bristol City who were interested I was delighted to come down and speak to the manager.

"I played my best football under the manager at Yeovil. I know the way he likes to play and it suits me. It was also the happiest time of my career.”

Williams's spell at Town was hampered by injury but the Welshman is hopeful he will be fine from now on: "I've been fit a few months now. I did have a lot of injuries at Ipswich but hopefully that's the end of it."
