Town are reported to be keeping an eye on Chelsea attacking midfielder Lee Sawyer currently on loan at Southend. Sawyer, 19, is an England U16, U18 and U19 international.

The Leytonstone-born youngster joined Chelsea when aged nine and has progressed through the ranks at the London club's academy. During his final season as a scholar he recovered from a stress fracture to his back and a cruciate knee ligament injury.

In August he was sent on a three-month loan to Southend where he has made nine starts and one sub appearance, scoring three goals.

Sawyer is a central midfielder so appears an unlikely target for the Blues with Town already having innumerable options in that area at present. The Blues are likely to have watched the Shrimpers in action on a regular basis this season with Dan Harding on loan at Roots Hall.

Meanwhile, TWTD understands that Wigan Athletic have regularly been sending scouts to Portman Road this season.

Latics manager Steve Bruce is a known admirer of Town striker Jon Walters and his club may well have been the second Premier League side which made an enquiry regarding the Town midfielder late in the summer transfer window. Stoke also asked about the 24-year-old's availability, but despite much speculation made no offer.

Bruce knows Walters well as the former Chester man and his son Alex were together at Blackburn's academy as teenagers. Danny Haynes has also been linked with Bruce and Wigan in the past, but the England U19 international has rarely been involved with the Town first team in recent months and so seems a less likely target.

Elsewhere, Ian Westlake's proposed move to Cheltenham from Leeds has fallen through due to contractual issues, while Sam Parkin has left Luton to join Leyton Orient on a three-month loan.
