Morgan Will Carry on Town Tradition
Morgan Will Carry on Town Tradition

New academy manager Sammy Morgan will continue Town's tradition of bringing through young players, according to chief executive Derek Bowden. Morgan, previously the academy's education officer, was confirmed as Tony Humes's successor yesterday.

Bowden told TWTD: "Sammy's not new to the role as he was academy manager at Norwich. He's very excited and he'll carry on the tradition.

"Sammy is a qualified teacher and we may replace him as education officer. We're looking at the structure of the academy and normally the education role and the welfare role go together, and welfare is handled by Helen Broughton, who is also head of the Playford Road site.

"I think we'll be looking at whether or not we support Sammy directly with another educationalist or whether he can take on some that responsibility himself, given that he's got Helen supporting him on the welfare and the admin side.”

The move came about after the recent review of the academy which Bowden says doesn't signal the club reducing its commitment to its youth set-up: "There'll be no radical changes to the academy at all. The academy will remain an academy.

”Like every department, we're looking to run it as efficiently as we can, but we're not looking to scale it down, that's not the intention at all.”

Morgan's appointment is the latest in a number of changes to the Town coaching staff with John Gorman coming in as assistant manager and Bryan Klug moving to head of football development.

Bowden says the decision to appoint Gorman allows Klug to go back to doing what he does best: "It was a considered move to bring in a seasoned number two, which was what Jim wanted. It gives Bryan Klug a chance to play to his strengths as head of football development.”

The chief executive is keen to avoid suggestions that Klug's new job is effectively one of director of football: "He's what might be referred to as a technical director at other clubs.

"We deliberately didn't call him the director of football because that suggests he's selecting the team and is the manager by another name and he's not that. The role is about coaching from cradle to grave, so to speak.”

Klug held the academy manager's job from its inception in 1998 until becoming Jim Magilton's first team coach in 2006.
