Swansea Not Giving Up on Pablo Deal

Swansea City are still hopeful that Town striker Pablo Couñago will join them, according to reports in Wales. Over the weekend Couñago turned down a move to the Liberty Stadium after the clubs agreed a fee somewhere approaching £500,000.

Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins has hinted that discussions may still be ongoing despite the deal previously appearing to be dead: "The ball is not in our court.

"If the player wants to stay at Ipswich, that is up to him and we have never focused on just one option.

"What I would say is that there are a few options at this stage which may or may not come off."

After Couñago turned down the switch to the Swans, manager Roy Keane challenged the striker to win himself a starting position in his side: "I've no problem with Pablo staying and fighting for his place here, absolutely no problem at all.

"If the club receive an offer for a player that they think is acceptable, then you put it to the player, but if the player doesn't want to leave, then no problem.

"I spoke to Pablo and told him that if he wanted a new challenge at a new club then fair enough, but if wants to stay he has to come out fighting for his place.

"He knows I'm looking to bring in one or two new strikers, so he will have to battle for his place in the team and hopefully we will see him up for the challenge.”

This time last year, Couñago signed a contract extension with the Blues taking his current terms to June 2011. He returned to Town after two years in Malaga in the summer of 2007 on a free transfer.
