Town Legend Sir Bobby Robson Dies
Town Legend Sir Bobby Robson Dies
Friday, 31st Jul 2009 10:31

Legendary Town manager Sir Bobby Robson has died at the age of 76. Robson, who managed the Blues from 1969 to 1982, had been battling cancer for the fifth time.

Robson, who also managed Fulham, England, PSV, Sporting Lisbon, Porto, Barcelona and Newcastle, led Town to the 1978 FA Cup and the 1981 UEFA Cup during the club's most successful decade.

Cancerous nodules were discovered in Robson's lungs in May 2007 and he had been undergoing treatment since then.

It wasn't his first fight against the disease. In 1992 he overcame bowel cancer then and a mouth cancer three years later. In May 2006 he underwent surgery when a tumour was found on his lung after a skiing accident.

Three months later Robson had surgery to remove a brain tumour which was revealed by tests after the former England boss was taken ill at the Blues' opening game of the 2006/07 season against Crystal Palace.

On Sunday he was presented with a UEFA Order of Merit award at a match between his 1990 England side and Germany at St James's Park which raised funds for his Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.

Robson will be greatly missed by all in football, not least Town supporters. Add your tributes in the comments section below.

I have half expected this for some time, but it still hits me like a thunderbolt.

Sir Bobby was a true legend, not just in Ipswich but in Newcastle and arguably for England as well.

I was so lucky to have seen his best ever Ipswich teams in the late 1970's and early 1980's, a team so good the best in Europe came to Portman Road and parked the bus in front of goal.

His record speaks for itself, alongside Clough and Ramsey undoubtedly one of Englands greatest coaches.

As a Derby County fan over five decades, Bobby Robson was one of the constants throughout my lifetime of watching football. I'm feeling very sad and empty to know that he's no longer with us.

Regardless of what his teams ever did to the Rams during his illustrrious career, I have only good memories of his manner and humour.

Sir Bobby will always be held up as a great ambassador for football and the way it should be played; he will receive sincere tributes from the hundreds of people that worked with him and for him, and the millions of fans that support his teams, including all England supporters.

He will stand as one of the great sporting figures of modern times, and in a similar way to our own great figure, Brian Clough, easily transcended the world of football to command love & respect from people all over the world.

All we can do is thank him for his contribution to our lives and take something of his spirit forward with us in our own endeavours.

R.I.P. Sir Bobby.

I didn't know him well, but I have had the pleasure of playing golf with Sir Bobby and having dinner with him and have always admired him and respected him as a true gentleman.
In the late 70's when I was a Building Society Branch Manager Bobby kindly performed the opening ceremony for me on two separate occasions, on one occasion surprising me by bringing Mick Mills with him with the FA Cup, and as you can imagine I have some very special photographs. Long before and ever since Bobby has always been one of my heroes.

I conduct so many funerals and some I shed tears at - I certainly am today on hearing this news even though expected for some time.

It's hard to think of football life without the man who did so much for football - and ITFC especially - it's all been said before but good football, a 'gentleman', a great leader, a really nice man (I met him briefly once but felt part of his 'team' as a supporter from his early days at Portman Road onwards. A true, true, great. Wonderful memories remain. I often say at funerals that the person we mourn will live on in our lives, not just in memory, but because of the influence they have had on us and so they become part of our lives in the future - that feels so true in Bobby Robson's case. Great thanks for a great man.

God is dead! Too so many, football is the meaning of life and Sir Bobby was the leader. It was a privilege to have been an Ipswich Town supporter during his reign. Being a supporter of England when he became the most successful manager since Sir Alf; before England became a farce; and to watch his influence throughout the world of “true” football. Sir Bobby stood for the beautiful game. True football. Before the age of obscene money to corrupt the game. Before the age of mercenary football players with no loyalty to their clubs. Playing football in a stile that fortunately, Ipswich managed to maintain after his departure. It's an extremely sad day for the whole of the footballing World. Many thanks Sir Bobby. A terribly sad day. I am not one who agrees with the modern tendency for displaying public grief over so called celebrities who people never even knew but this is so so different. It will all be on show tonight at P Rd and quite right too. What a man , what a life. No matter how many trophies that whinging bad losing Jock at old Trafford wins he will never ever be a Sir in my eyes and if you need a reason , just stand him alongside Sir Bobby. I remember in the 70's playing golf by myself at Purdis heath. Ahead of me, Sir Bobby and Bobby Ferguson playing together. Seeing a 14 yr old lad by himself, I was immediately invited to join in the rest of the round. Imagine the impact. For those of us lucky enough to experience that decade, he was not just part of a less cynical and money driven age, he was an integral part of our lives. Thank you Sir Bobby for all the wonderrful memories and rest in peace.

He took us to the highest levels and sutained this for a decade or so... and look how he developed our youngsters to become internationals. He was completely dedicated to the task spending almost every waking hour on the job in some fashion.
I had the privilege of meeting him in Canada when he brought the Town over for pre-season training in 1969 plus 3 other subsequent occasions and found him to be extremely approachable and interesting to be with.
He was and is my hero and in my opinion,it would be fitting if one of our stands could bear his name.

Not that I can say anything that has not already been said, but Robson was a true Town legend, and I only wish I could have been there to see his team in its golden era.

RIP Sir Bobby, and thanks for everything.

A true football gent always had time for the fans and we should be very thankful that if it wasn't for Bobby the club we all know and love wouldn't be as it is now if it wasn't for the hard work , belief and love he had for Ipswich and its fans , i hope that the club put in place a lasting memorial and name a stand after him .Goodbye Sir Bobby the Suffolk Gordie

Very sad news, the world is a poorer place this evening. An absolutely wonderful man who warmed the hearts of so many. Am so proud as a town fan that we had the pleasure of having him manage our team (albeit before I can really remember). He will never be forgotten.

Rest In Peace Sir Bobby Robson - Legend xxx

I remember the days of the Robson era with great affection, when our club was taken to levels beyond our dreams.....thanks Sir Bob.
His love of our club and that of his home town...The Magpies should not be underestimated. He would have had divided loyalties when we play each other. The South Stand should be re-named The Robson Stand and opened in that name in September when we play Newcastle.

[DELETE POST] [BAN USER!!!] Rest in peace Bobby Robson, a true legend. His memory will never die in fans old and young alike.
Unfortunately i am not old enough to have experienced the Robson town era first hand and can only begin to imagine how proud this great man made our small town feel.
You will never be forgotten.

P.S. I agree with Truthurstonblue in re-naming a stand after Sir Bobby, a respectful gesture to all he did

[DELETE POST] [BAN USER!!!] I met him behind the Cobbold Stand in 1987 when watching the like of Dozzell, Wilson and Atkinson train...Ferguson was yelling and despite being England manager, he just shouted encouragement, he was all over Town even after 5 years away. He then came over and gave me and my Brother a hug...6 years old then and he has reamained a hero forever for me.

[DELETE POST] [BAN USER!!!] I am an Ipswich Town fan and I stalked Sir Bobby on several occasions through the years.
When he and Mick Mills came to open a new building society in Halstead in the early Eighties, I bunked off school early to be there - my first taste of truant.
When he appeared on John Inverdale's shortlived TV show, I went along to the recording and afterwards told him he shouldn't take the Everton job, but come back to Ipswich instead. He looked at me as if I were mad. It was a pretty stupid suggestion, as we already had a manager and were in Division One (as it was then called).
And, at a dinner to mark the 30th anniversary of the Town UEFA Cup win, I asked him to hold the club's mini replica of the trophy, so I could take his picture with it. "But this is tiny - it's not the real thing!" he said.
He could be a curmudgeon and was pretty demanding, I'm sure - but that's what made him successful.
What singles him out from the rest, is the love of football which seeped from every pore. It is what connects him with fans, in a way that most modern footballers managers don't. It is why even fans whose club team have no association with Sir Bobby hold him in such high regard.
When I grew up, my greatest heroes were Stevie Wonder, Bobby Robson and my dad. My dad died two years ago after multiple battles against cancer -and I knew this day would open it all up again. I was not wrong.
