Town Considering Robson Stand Tribute
Town Considering Robson Stand Tribute
Sunday, 2nd Aug 2009 21:49

TWTD understands that Town are considering renaming one of Portman Road's stands in tribute to Sir Bobby Robson, who died on Friday.

In the days since Robson’s death, supporters have proposed various ideas with which to pay tribute to the legendary Blues boss with a stand being renamed popular, along with suggestions centred around the home game with Newcastle United on September 26th.

In August last year, with Robson battling cancer for the fifth time, TWTD Message Boarder Andy Feasey started a petition calling for the North Stand to be renamed in his honour, an idea which was backed by the Official Supporters Club and which the club didn’t rule out.

Greene King's sponsorship of the South Stand ended over the summer and the former Churchman's may also be considered for the potential name change.

Ideas suggested relating to the Newcastle game include both teams replacing their sponsors’ logos with ads for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and the two clubs wearing commemorative shirts which would subsequently be auctioned off for the charity.

On Friday, Town announced that all proceeds from the friendly with Real Valladolid would go to Robson’s Foundation.

Meanwhile, Robson’s family say they have been moved by the nation's reaction to Sir Bobby's death: "The family is humbled and overwhelmed by the public response to his passing."

On Sunday, Lady Elsie and sons Andrew, 50, and Paul, 52, visited the shrine created by fans at St James’ Park.

Tremendous idea as Bobby Robson put us on the map and has given us most of our glorious history.

Not just the face of ipswich but football its self. What is there to consider?

Greene King should be Sir Alf Ramsey Stand.
North Stand should be Sir Bobby Robson Stand.

Rest in Peace again to a Legend who will be sorely missed.

Some people have said that Sir Bobby's statue is enough and I'd thought, yeah, maybe you're right. But then I thought, no, nothing was ever too much for Sir Bobby and nothing would be too much as a tribute to him. I think it would be a fantastic idea to rename the North Stand as The Sir Bobby Robson Stand and I like the ideas for the Newcastle match too.

I dunno about anyone else but I think I'd take a defeat a little easier if I turned round to leave and looked up to see the words, "The Sir Bobby Robson Stand". Sir Bobby was always so gracious in defeat - maybe that would rub off on the supporters.

One day there will be a cure for cancer. If money from Sir Bobby's charity helped towards that, well, you couldn't get a better tribute.

I can understand the sentiment. But, as someone else has said, if we have a Sir Bobby Stand, what about Sir Alf?

I think the idea of having both teams wearing "Robson Foundation" sponsored shirts for the Newcastle match is a brilliant one. But please let us all buy one too. Limiting them to just 11 shirts would miss a big opportunity for so many fans to make their own statement.

I'm disappointed the club didn't rename a stand in Sir Bobby's honour earlier. Can you imagine how proud he would be to see the unveiling of a stand at Portman Road bearing his name?

Also, the idea mentioned above for the Ipswich-Newcastle game sounds excellent. Like someone said above, I can't see what there is to consider. If the fans want Bobby to be honoured then the club should honour him because that shows what he meant to us.

Great ideas all round. Especially like the idea of renaming both stands, one sir bobby, one sir alf.
Also, the Newcastle game is live on T.V. so what a great way to promote the charity.
Its nice to see the club joining together again.

Rather than stands, the most fitting tribute would be renaming Playford Road as the Sir Bobby Robson Academy.
The youth system was the bedrock for everything that he achieved at Ipswich and is something that the club have become truly admired for. What better tribute can there be than for every young kid arriving at the training ground to be given a reminder of just how well this club will treat you, how they will nurture your talent, how they will give you a chance? What better tribute for every senior player to be given a reminder of the values and spirit of the club that they represent?

If you had a vote on what the fans wanted, I predict 95%+ would agree with the proposal to rename a stand after Bobby. Please, please let's not hang about and allow Newcastle United to steal our Bobby and name one of their stands first. The national press and news have been making too much of his connections with Newcastle and have underplayed his 13 years with Town. Let's not allow people to forget that it is here that he developed to become one of the best and most respected managers of his era, and where he won his only English silverware.

I also think that it seems right to recognise both of our mangers who did so much for us and our country. Remember the club that we were before Alf took charge and what he achieved with us (League Champions!) before leading our country (World Champions!) -- So why not a Sir Bobby Robson Stand and a Sir Alf Ramsey stand? It would give them both the honour that they deserve as well as reminding us and our visitors of the proud heritage of the club.

On the subject of the shirts for the Newcastle game, which will raise the most money, auctioning 11 (or 22) shirts, or letting all Town and United fans have a chance to buy one at £40? I think the latter.

Would be a very fitting tribute to Sir Bobby, personally i wish it had been done years ago, the newcastle game will be a perfect time if it goes ahead, just a shame the great man won't be there to see it. RIP Sir Bobby

This is fantastic news. I also agree that it would be wonderful to have a Sir Alf Ramsey stand as well. Let's hope that this all comes to fruition. Good suggestion as well from olimar to rename our academy.

Phil and Gavin, I like the "new look" site.

Wholeheartedly agree with all the ideas. He was a great man, but what about naming the North Stand the Sir Bobby Robson Stand and the South Stand the Sir Alf Ramsey Stand. Sponsers can still sponser it by being able to say so and so sponser of the Sir so and so stand. Probably do better business that way.

if both clubs ITFC and NU have stutues and stands named after the man ,it would be no more than he diserved, JUST DO IT .

What about an annual pre season match between ITFC & NUFC, alternating between PR & SJP, for the Sir Bobby Robson Memorial Trophy, with all profits going to the Foundation.

Agree with all the points. The shirt idea is excellent. Not just for the players but maybe do a run of 5000 of each strip to be sold for the charity. I'd sure as heck have one

Renaming a Stand is the least that Bobby deserves. I'd even go as far as the Stadium. It should have been done while he was alive but I guess this will at least show our respect for him going forward.

Happy to see the North Stand renamed in his honour. Keep the Churchmans for sponsors..

I agree with Olimar and think that renaming the Academy would be an inspirational choice on many levels.

It is obviously a sensitive issue but I like the idea of renaming TWO stands but the North Stand should be Sir Alf Ramsey Stand (it is in Sir Alf Ramsey Way after all so would be confusing if it were the South Stand) and the Greene King Stand should be Sir Bobby Robson Stand.
I like ALL the other ideas as well and it is good to see so many creative ideas from the fans.
