Clegg: Town Considering Tribute Ideas
Clegg: Town Considering Tribute Ideas
Monday, 3rd Aug 2009 15:17

Chief executive Simon Clegg has confirmed that naming one of Portman Road’s stands after Sir Bobby Robson is amongst a number of ideas being considered as a tribute to the Blues’ former manager. Clegg revealed that the club had discussed the idea with Robson prior to his death.

Clegg told the club site: "We have given serious consideration to a further permanent memorial and tribute to Sir Bobby.

"There are a range of ideas that we are looking at and have been looking at over the past few months.

"Naming a stand after Sir Bobby is one of the options that we have discussed and we spoke to Sir Bobby about it, but he didn't feel it was appropriate until a period after he had passed away. We obviously want to respect that and will respect that.

"We will listen to what the supporters have to say and all ideas for a fitting tribute will be given all due consideration, but at the end of the day it needs to be a football recognition, something identifiable with the club and Portman Road in particular."

Meanwhile, Alan Shearer has backed a campaign to either have one of the stands at St James’ Park renamed after Robson or to have a statue erected at Newcastle to go along with the one at Portman Road: “I hope that happens because he would deserve it that’s for sure.”

“The legacy he left behind in football was huge. Everywhere he went he was a huge success because everybody loved him so much.

“He was able to talk to both the young and old and he was the true Geordie gentleman.”

Can't help thinking this would be an ideal time to form some sort of long term affiliation with Newcastle? Perhaps we play them they play us on alternate seasons? Something like that.

I think that it's really important that the club reflect on what they want to do, and don't rush into something.
It's clear from the reaction to the news of his death that Sir Bobby was someone that people really respected and loved, and Ipswich should do something to properly recognise his massive contribution to the club. They also have to do choose something which doesn't take away from remembering Sir Alf. We're lucky as a club to have two legendary managers to be able to celebrate.

Its not just players he has influenced, Just look at the two teams that won serie A and la liga Jose Mourinho and Pepe Guardiola both learnt from their time under Sir Bobby. Jose was his assistant at Barcelona and Pepe was in the playing staff, there as well.

I agree with 6fish, maybe a friendly should be arranged each season between Newcastle and Ipswich! All proceeds of course going towards the Bobby Robson Foundation.

Can't really see why we need to hang around with naming a stand after the great man. It seems the obvious and "standard" thing to do, so let's just do it! This action need not preclude other inventive ideas for further celebrating his memory if these crop up later.

6fish- we'll be playing them twice a season for the foreseeable future! But I agree with some kind of match against them would be good, I'm sure Newcastle would like that too.
I think any kind of tribute i.e; naming a stand after him would be a fantastic tribute to him at PR, but not necessarily the North Stand. I say that because Sir Alf's statue looks on to The North Stand and being on Sir Alf Way, some people I've spoken to feel it would an insult to Sir Alf?
Personally I like the idea of a "Sir Bobby Robson tournament" would be great with the teams he was successful at.....which is nearly all of them!! Ipswich, PSV, either Porto or Barcalona and Newcastle would be superb.

As a north stander I would be proud to have it renamed the Sir Bobby Robson stand and forever it should stay!

Maybe better to wait until either the Portman Rd or Brittania is re-developed and then rename the stand. That could/will be some time off but would give the agreed period before the naming. However it is a little bog-standard don't you think?

What about redevelopment or substantial improvements to the Academy and naming that after SBR?

A friendly pre-season cup match, e.g. "SBR Trophy", hosted on alternate years by each club (IT and NU) sounds terrific. A real meaningful contest before the season starts...sounds so much better than the annual Charity Bore. Or every four years with PSV, Barcelona, Porto, NU all invited. Only problem with that is guess who would win? Mind you we'd get a trip to Barca!!

Would love to see an annual pre-season friendly against Newcastle with all the proceeds to go towards the Sir Bobby Robson Cancer foundation/charity.

If possible Sir Bobby's great team of 1981 V an England team of 1990 what a fitting tribute to 2 great sides managed by the Gentleman of Football.

I like the idea of a Bobby Robson Trophy each season in which all his best known clubs compete. No reason why it can't be hosted by a different one each season.
I also like the idea of the players wearing the cancer fund logo on their shirts for the Ipswich Newcastle matches this season.
My only reservation is re naming the North Stand. It will always be the North Stand and that defeats the object. Churchmans is still called Churchmans even by people who weren't born when the factory shut down. If a naming a stand is to be done it ought to be the Brittania Stand and while we are at it re-name the road.

why not have a statue built outside the stadium, theyve got one for Alf Ramsey why not one of Sir Bobby Robson?

I agree with both proposals regarding a possible Memorial Trophy match or renaming a stand in Sir Bobby's honour but I can see some people's point about Sir Alf and the North Stand. Surely having the Bobby Robson Suite in Churchmans makes that stand the obvious choice doesn't it?
