Newcastle Without Guthrie for Town Clash
Newcastle Without Guthrie for Town Clash

Newcastle United will be without midfielder Danny Guthrie when they meet the Blues at Portman Road on Saturday after the former Liverpool man was red-carded during last night’s Carling Cup tie against Peterborough. Posh, who beat Town in the previous round, defeated the Magpies 2-0.

Caretaker-manager Chris Hughton rested a number of senior squad members and handed four players - Haris Vuckic, James Tavernier, Ryan Donaldson and Ben Tozer - full debuts against Darren Ferguson’s side.

Newcastle also continue to be linked with a loan move for ex-Town loan striker Marlon Harewood, who is currently with Aston Villa.

Meanwhile, Town’s reserves are in action against Stevenage Borough at Portman Road this afternoon (KO 2pm).

Elsewhere, former Town loanee Giovani Dos Santos will be given the opportunity to impress Spurs boss Harry Redknapp this evening when his side face Preston in the Carling Cup.

Redknapp, who is yet to pick Dos Santos for a league game, says he was less than impressed with the Mexican’s attitude last season: “He let himself down last year. He wasn't in good shape, he didn't look after himself. Now he's fitter, leaner and has great ability.

“I've spoken to his mum and dad, they came to see me. I told them he had a big chance and they said he had off the field issues and didn't do himself any favours.

“The penny has dropped, about applying himself and adapting himself. He found it hard to get into training on time, and different stuff. He's realised he can't do that here, he's toed the line.”

Dos Santos has again been linked with Spanish side Deportivo La Coruña, who have been given special dispensation to sign a player before the end of this month after complications in the deal which took Angel Lafita to Real Zaragoza on the final day of the transfer window. The La Liga club say they are confident of being able to do a deal with Tottenham.

Ha - Gio wouldn't have lasted long under RK if he finds it hard to get into training on time & doesn't apply himself.

i keep looking for signings that we were told would be arriving to strengthen the team and as under jm nothing seems to happen? is it to keep us fans quiet as we know we need to strengthen?

Surely all we need to do is pick a settled side, that way they can gell as a unit, rather than all the chopping & changing! Priskin needs a run in the side, if RK thought he was a good buy & worth 1.7m why does he not have faith in his ability and make him first choice centre forward?

Thats funny, because he was fitter than the rest of our side last season. Just goes to show second rate our club has become in recent years, atleast Keane has done something about that aspect of the team.

Uttlesford...we may be fitter under RK but we haven't won a game yet this season!! Coaching isn't just about fitness, you only need to look at our defence to prove that. Gio stood out because of his skill, not fitness, after all if you can't run about at Gio's age when can ya????

I think the Defense will close their eyes this weekend and use the 'Force' - anyway, so long as we score 1 more goal than the Magpies we'll be Happy . . .

Can't make the Game this weekend, but will be watching the Box - COYB, I'll be having a bid on a shirt or two also!

I see the Exec's are still bumbling over RK's Loan Choices - - oh they do need to get up to speed a little quicker!

Mr Viljoen, Prisken will come good, that I am sure off.

The problem is our defence looks shambolic at the moment and I fear a televisual disaster this saturday...at least Jim sorted the defence out

Let's be positive & back Keano. We can make do with the defense we've got & try to score more than them. Maybe the reduced weight of expectation will help in the next 2 games? It would be nice if we can stick to an 11 for a few weeks & they start to get settled. Lot's of noise at PR this weekend if we get at them a bit & who knows.

Sol Campbell to sign for Town?....

I think Roy has finally got a settled team and subs now. Also now that the frantic team reconstruction is easing he will be able to spend more time on team building, coaching, one to ones and systems.

Morgana, Sol Campbell for Town? The guys a Journeyman mercenary and could cause more problems than he solves - but I agree we need an experienced Centre Half to control the back 4 as opposed to a younger player who has potential.

GM might even benefit with a cooler head alongside him!

Not a GM fan to be honest, he was truely awful against boro and his mistakes cost us the game. i think sol would be a good addidtion, but im not sure its a good idea as it would only be a short term solution, but then again players like Bruce amd pim would learn alot and become better players if they were to play and train alongside him. This notts county affair is the first time campbell has ever really let himself down.

Good news that Danny Guthrie isn't playing. Should all but guarantee no broken legs. Ask Craig Fagan!

was Gio fitter than the rest of our side when he was here? i remember him being good going forward but he never ventured over the half-way line to defend, to be honest i thought he was pretty lazy most of the time.

But good news about Guthrie being suspended as he's looked pretty good in the games ive seen this season

Sol Campbell would be a risky signing, and also a very expensive one at that

Anyone who scores 4 goals in six starts can be as lazy as he wants for me!!! Class will always shine above fitness

Lightningboy, what planet are you on?
Superdim's defense was no different to what we have now.
Thatcher (rather crude left back) or wright on the left, yet another player played out of position.
McCauley had a pretty poor season overall and is still there now.
Our best defender Brucie was not even picked in the team in the team by Dim.
So please explain how Dim had sorted the defense out?
Dim did not have a clue when picking the team and kept his golfing buddies playing when they should have been put out to pasture.
Keano had nothing really to build on from Dim spending 12Mill and the playing ethics were rotten to the core.
In Keano we trust.
