Town Announce Schedule for Newcastle Game
Town Announce Schedule for Newcastle Game
Wednesday, 23rd Sep 2009 16:50

Town have announced the schedule for Saturday’s game with Newcastle United which will see the North Stand renamed the Sir Bobby Robson Stand in honour of the legendary Blues manager.

Lady Elsie Robson and around 40 Town stars of the past - including George Burley, Mick Mills, Frans Thijssen, Kevin Beattie, John Wark and Allan Hunter - will rechristen the stand in a ceremony held at half-time.

At 4.15 representatives from both clubs and the mayors of Ipswich and Newcastle will place wreaths on the statue of Robson in Portman Road, while the scarves and shirts which were left by fans in the weeks after his death will be returned to the monument. Former Blues skipper Mick Mills will place a wreath on behalf of Robson’s players.

The ex-players and staff will be introduced to the crowd at 5.15pm before Abide With Me is sung by Laura Wright from the All Angels operatic group. Prior to the 5.30pm kick-off, there will be a minute’s applause.

At half-time, Lady Elsie and sons Mark and Paul will cut ribbons which will release 709 blue and white balloons, marking Robson’s games in charge of the club.

Prior to the match, from 3.30pm, Suffolk Punch horses will be in Alderman Park.

would still rather observe what would be an immaculate minutes silence..

i know the spin is clapping is to applaud his remarkable ahceivement, but i thik there can eb no greater respect paid than perfect silence to think and reflect..

applause has always been tainted in my view as it was brought in for those who tried to ruin silences..

either way, great send off for a great, great man..cannot wait to pay tribute..

RIP Sir Bobby, Gentleman and football genius

I agree with Balhamblue. A minute's silence would be a far more fitting tribute to the great man. I don't want to be too petty though because the club have clearly given the day a lot of thought and it sounds as overall it will a fitting tribute to the late, great, Sir Bobby.

Really looking forward to a memorable occasion. Even the most cynical (like myself, admittedly) would struggle not to be moved. Let's hope for glorious weather, dignifified ceremonies, amazing memories of a wonderful gentleman, terrific game of football...and A TOWN WIN! (sorry Geordies)

The club seem to have the off field side in top order, well done Ipswich, I'm looking forward to the day to pay tribute to the late great Sir Bobby. I'm sure both sets of fans will sing their hearts out for him, it may give our players the lift they need to get our first win. Although we don't all agree on this site about everything, I know we'll all be as one Saturday.

Agree with all of you. I think a fitting tribute to a great man. I sincerely wish I could be there with you all but have to work. I will be over on Tuesday to Sheffield to see our 2nd victory. I will record BBC coverage. If anyone knows of any stream that will show the ceremony etc please let me know.

To all you younger fans who never saw Robsons sides.... the most appropriate chant will not be the "one Bobby Robson" but the Ipswich version of Blayden Races which was regularly sung in the north stand especially in the mid-late seventies...It would be great to hear rousing reditions of...
Whoahh The lads ( not Haway the lads)
You should have seen their faces
walking up to Portman Rooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad
TO SEE BOB ROBSONS ACES!

And well done Town, sounds like a good day well planned

Right - I'm warning you lot right now. When the balloons go up I think I might cry. Please just ignore me if I do. It will be emotional...

Well done to the Town management for arranging what sounds a fitting tribute to our Great Man. Agree with many that a minute's silence would be more respectful however a minutes applause is what seems to happen these days. As for Fixed_It, you old jessie, don't worry I bet there won't be a dry eye in the place, I'm welling up at the thought of it!!

I think the club has got this spot on. It sounds like a fantastic tribute to the great man.

I had been worried by our move from being a family club to a corporate identity under Marcus - however this has restored some faith.

RIP Sir Bobby
