Peterborough Chasing McAuley?
Peterborough Chasing McAuley?
Friday, 9th Oct 2009 08:41

Peterborough United are interested in signing Town central defender Gareth McAuley on loan, according to one of this morning's tabloids. The Northern Irishman recently revealed that he had been told he could leave the club.

Town are known to be looking for a loan central defender themselves, with McAuley likely to be the man to make way when the new man comes in.

Peterborough have confirmed that they are chasing a central defender, however, comments made by director of football Barry Fry earlier in the week suggest that McAuley isn’t their number one target: "There is definitely a chance we could have a defender in the squad before our next match.

"It's a player the manager made his major target in the summer, but for one reason or another we weren't able to complete a deal.

"We have an agreement in place with the player, but the club are keen on tying the lad to a new contract before they allow him to go on loan."

Town have no plans for former skipper McAuley to sign a new deal, so he is not the player Fry is talking about, although it’s possible that the 29-year-old could be seen as an alternative or additional signing.

Big mistake to let him go anywhere ,at least he has the ability to find form our other defenders David Wright aside do not possess the ability however much they train or kiss the badge .
Campbell going to West Brom and no sign of loanees coming in ,worrying times ahead

when he's good ,he's good......but when he's bad he's bloody awful, jury out on that one. Think the goal he scored could have sparked him into life, but then these bloody international breaks come along , wouldnt be too hasty getting rid .

If you notice, it is The Mirror that reported this, The Mirror has written 6/7 stories recently all connected with Ipswich...seems a bit odd!

sending our best defender and one of the more senior players to a club near us in the table ON LOAN! obviously may not happen but the mere thought makes you scared for the future. we're the worst defence in the league, can you even begin to imagine what would happen without McAuley. Don't hold a grudge Keano, we need him.

What's happening with the "one or 2 players" Roy was hoping to bring in on loan about 2 weeks ago then?!...seems like we're having trouble attracting anyone to play for a club bottom of the table which isn't surprising...pull your fingers out.

Pottyblue, if you haven't noticed the rest of our defenders are cr@p! That's why McAuley is our best defender. Remember last season, after a shaky start he did actually come good.
Let's hope these loan signings show up soon though.

let him go

he played well against sheffield utd away and took his goal well and celebrated in front of us in the away end, he had 1 dodgy moment which was cleaned up for him by young tommy smith but thats part of being a defensive partnership, hopefully the goal will spur him in to bigger and better things, last season he did come good but it took at least half or 3/4's of the season for him to get up to speed which simply isn't good enough for a professional footballer

let him go! he's been next to useless (amongst others), by the time he decides to find some form we could be into the second half of the season!

Where are the new signings??

No way should we let Mac go to one of our relegation rivals without an heir & a spare signed up & on board at the very least..

Peterborough - Who are they ! No way must McAuley go, with the leaks we have at the back ! We should get behind him, when he's good he's GOOD.

Big G's not going anywhere would be my guess? not unless there's 2 quality players inbound with options to buy. Why the Hell would we want to help Peterborough stay up? McAuley is starting to show some form, and I agree the goal will be a boost to him, should score more [did at Lincs and Leicester] - Big G to stop and bag 6 Goals this season and once again be a rock in the town Defence along side 1 loanee.

I see the Exec's still got fingers up bums concerning bringing in new players . . oh dear, oh my. Cleggy, sort it out!

Poor old McAuley, I find some of the contributors on here quite strange, in one breath it's give Keaneo a chance, give him time, then having had SOME poor performances this season, you want rid of McAuley straight away. He had a shaky start last season & for some reason has done the same again this year, give the lad a chance, just like you're giving Keaneo one!
Being told you can leave by the manager just half a dozen games into the season probably hasn't helped his confidence any, How would you feel?????

Ive heard he's played fairly well in the last couple of games considering he was told he would be transfer listed, i dont think we should let him go like bedsitfc said when he's on form he is a good defender, he doesnt miss a thing in the air its just when he has the ball at his feet i get abit worried. I think he just needs confidence like last season he started poorly but once he got some confidence he was probably our best defender

Some of you have lost the plot here, we're terribly poor at the back as we all know, I would actually say that we need two more central defenders in on loan and GM would then be cover....it takes nothing for a player to get a silly injury at this level, we have good cover in the middle of the park and we need the same at the back!
0

Yallop added 13:32 - Oct 9
If thats the case I'd still rather have Bruce and Smith as cover

byebyesheepshanks added 14:24 - Oct 9
Cover for what? Themselves?! Why don't you put your moose hat on & pop down to De Vos's cabin Frank & get him back here!

I find McAuley so frustrating to watch. He does win the ball in the air most times and he is brave. But, with the ball at his feet he does seem to panic and hoof it anywhere - often to the opposition. Clearly his confidence was shot to pieces earlier and maybe it's now recovering. Let's hope so, as he could be a great asset to the team - but he could also be a liability if he continues to make so many basic errors.

I shall now return to my position on the fence...
